By BerksMontNews StaffThis summer there’s a chance to see the Bertolet Sawmill in action at Daniel Boone Homestead. Demonstrations continue July 16, 23, and 30 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. This is one of only a few water powered, vertical-blade sawmills in the United States. It was originally built in Oley Township by Daniel Bertolet in the late eighteenth century. It was moved to the homestead in 1972. Demonstrations last about a half hour and are subject to staff availability. Please call ahead to confirm operation times.
Admission for the sawmill operation is free, but regular admission will be charged for the historic area and Boone House tours. Please leave your dogs and other pets at home and refrain from smoking in the historic area.
The Daniel Boone Homestead is the birthplace of the famed frontiersman, born in 1734. The Boone House, constructed in three stages throughout the eighteenth century, is a 10-room stone structure fully furnished to the period and situated on 579 acres of rolling countryside. The Daniel Boone Homestead is located halfway between Reading and Pottstown, one mile north of Rt. 422 near Baumstown. The Homestead is owned by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and daily historic operations are run by the Friends of the Daniel Boone Homestead, a local, non-profit organization.
