Last Friday, October 17, Kutztown Area High School Student Council hosted the “5th Quarter” after their home football game. This free event was created in order to allow kids to hang out after the game in a safe and fun environment.

As students from every grade gathered to snack on cookies and brownies, the band, Creating Space, made their public debut.

The band is comprised of four junior boys who have been playing together for about three years now and features Johnny Bispels on drums, David Schucker on bass guitar and vocals, Justin Collins on lead guitar and vocals, and Colton Cultlip on rhythmic guitar and vocals.

They played a mix of popular radio songs such as “Black Betty” by Ram Jam and original pieces entitled “Your Gonna Need a Bigger Boat” and “Lover of the Lie.”

The band was thrilled at the great turnout stating, “Every band hopes that their first show will have a great turnout like the 5th Quarter did. We were pleasantly surprised by the crowd’s enthusiasm and we look forward to future shows with the same atmosphere.”

Not only was it a positive event for the band, but for the students as well. Tyler Akers, a junior at Kutztown said, “It was great to see different groups of kids connecting with each other at a social event. Typically, students will separate into cliques and it was refreshing to see everyone interacting in a positive manner.”

Student council intends to create more events like this throughout the school year. Their main goal this year is to enhance school event participation and to make the school a better place to learn and to thrive. They would like to thank Principal, Mr. Barry Flicker, and Assistant Principal, Dr. Ed Meyers for their support.

“The 5th quarter is an example of our wider effort to not only provide events for our students to attend, but to also showcase the abilities and potentialities that exist within our student body,” said Myers.
