Gwen Bauer, a senior at Twin Valley High School, has been named November’s Intern of the Month.

Bauer’s internship at the Tri County Record began as an opportunity for her to pursue an interest in photography, but has since grown into an experience in which Bauer is able to do much more, including writing articles.

As an intern at the Tri County Record, some of Bauer’s responsibilities are to choose an assignment or two each week to complete. To do this, she conducts interviews with several people, from event attendees to supervisors. Bauer takes photos of people and activities that happen during each of the events that she is assigned to and adds captions to describe her best 12 photographs. In addition to snapping pictures, Bauer also submits an article, usually from 600 to 800 words.

“I originally started this internship as a photographer. The plan was for me to take photos for the paper, but I was being sent to some important events and my editor thought that I should do more and try getting information about the events I was attending and write a little bit about them,” said Bauer. “I actually picked up writing pretty quickly and have grown to love it so much that I’ve now decided that I want to continue writing and pursue it as a future career,” she added.

Even though Bauer’s first intentions in her internship were not to pursue writing, her experiences continue to teach her a lot about what it takes to someday have a job in the field.

“I’ve learned how much work actually goes into a newspaper and how difficult it can be sometimes,” said Bauer. “I also learned that detail is key when it comes to writing articles, interviewing, and taking photos. It’s a lot of work, but I really enjoy it,” she added.

Lisa Mitchell, editor of the Tri County Record, describes Bauer as an outstanding intern.

“Gwen continues to show her maturity beyond her years. She’s professional, eager to learn, takes feedback well and continues to improve,” said Mitchell. “We discussed her continuing to write for the paper after the internship ends,” she added.

Although Bauer has nothing but positive things to say about her internship, she said that her favorite part of interning at the Tri-County Record is the experiences that she receives.

“My favorite part of interning is the freedom that you get, the freedom to learn through experience on your own, but also getting to meet so many different and welcoming people, and learning about what they are passionate about, whether it’s people at the office, or people that I get to interview,” said Bauer.

Congratulations, Gwen Bauer, on being named November’s Intern of the Month. Best of luck to you as you continue your internship at the Tri-County Record as well as your other future endeavors. Bauer plans on attending either Albright College or West Chester University to major in Journalism/Communications.
