The Men’s Club: Keeping residents active and engaged at Chestnut Knoll

Chestnut Knoll takes the extra steps to ensure their residents are happy and comfortable within the community, but also have opportunities to explore their interests and keep busy outside the community walls.

The Men’s Club at Chestnut Knoll allows any senior gentleman living in the personal care or memory care community to get together once a week in a group setting. The group meets every Tuesday from 3:30-4:30 p.m., with around seven-11 residents attending. The men enjoy meeting to discuss current events, and do a lot of reminiscing.

The Men’s Club recently went on their first outing to the Friendship Hook and Ladder Fire Company Social Quarters, where they enjoyed a few drinks and each other’s company. Two residents are lifetime members of the social quarters, while the others are lifetime members of other fire halls in the Boyertown area.

“All of the men agree about how much they enjoy the club, which has been in existence for two years,” said Sam Gaugler, Chestnut Knoll staff member. “They say the meetings are great gatherings with enjoyable conversations, learning about things they have in common, and learning about others’ backgrounds. They all also enjoy a beer or glass of wine!”

The club plans to go to different fire department social halls and restaurants for some of their meetings in the future.

Thomas Herb, resident of Chestnut Knoll and member of the Men’s Club, said he really enjoyed the trip to the Friendship Hook and Ladder and hopes that they do it again sometime. When he was informed that maybe a trip to Iezzi’s Tavern might be next on the Men’s Club list of outings, he was quick to reply, “Sign me up!” with a smile on his face.

“Chestnut Knoll is very connected to the Boyertown community and we are so grateful that our residents can enjoy special outings to some of their favorite places,” said Shawn Barndt, executive director.
