Sarah Mundell, a senior at Twin Valley High School, has been named December’s Intern of the Month.

Mundell has been interning at Twin Valley Elementary Center for two years and her success as an intern has continued to grow over time.

As a junior, Mundell interned with learning support at TVEC under Mrs. Arielle Chirlin. During her time as an intern there, Mundell created computer-based social skills lessons for the students she was helping. Mundell had such a great time interning and helping the students learn that she decided to complete another internship at TVEC in her senior year.

Mundell currently interns with learning support teacher Mrs. Carol Ann Beaton. As an intern for Beaton, Mundell helps students in several classes who need extra support in their education. day-to- day, Mundell will help these students, one-on-one, often in mathematics and sometimes with other subjects like reading and writing.

“She [Mundell] is a very pleasant young lady who is helpful to others all the time. She has a lot of patience and always pitches in,” stated Beaton. “She is a quick learner, thinks fast on her feet, is trustworthy, and follows through with her endeavors,” she added.

Mundell has been so successful as an intern at TVEC that she was nominated for a Twin Valley Community Education Foundation “Rising Star” leadership award by her past and present mentors, Chirlin and Beaton, and internship coordinator Mrs. Angela Morgan.

In nominating Mundell for this award, the three teachers described her as a student/intern who “leads by example” as an “aspiring teacher but also a model student. Sarah strives towards excellence in all that she does and sets forth a positive model for the students with whom she mentors at TVEC.”

As a returning intern at the elementary center, Mundell stated that one of her favorite parts of going to TVEC is being able to see the impact she has on the students every day.

“I love seeing the smiles on the student’s faces. Sometimes when I walk into a classroom to help the students, they will all yell ‘Miss Sarah!’ and give me a hug,” stated Mundell. “Working with the students every day is rewarding for me, but it’s an even better feeling to see that a student is learning something new,” she added.

Completing an internship creates opportunities to help students discover what they may want to do in their future careers. As an intern for two years, Mundell feels that both of her internships have given her knowledge that she will never forget.

“I have learned that being a teacher takes a lot of confidence and hard work, and it takes effort to prepare effectively-designed lessons in order for the children to really understand what you are trying to say” said Mundell. “But the effort all pays off in the end when you see how successful and happy the students are,” added Mundell.

“My internships at TVEC have increased my interest in pursuing this type of career. I hope to someday become dual certified in special education and elementary education,” said Mundell. “The children and teachers at TVEC are amazing and it makes me sad to know that my internship will soon be ending,” she added.

Congratulations, Sarah Mundell, on being named December’s Intern of the Month. Mundell plans on attending West Chester University, Millersville University, or Shippensburg University in the fall, majoring in special education/elementary education.

Best of luck to you Sarah in your future endeavors!
