The Kutztown Rotary Club honored seniors Erika Matrone and Rebecca Merkel as students of the month for January at ceremonies at the Kutztown Tavern January 8.

The award is given each month of the school year to graduating seniors from Kutztown Area and Brandywine Heights High Schools who have been nominated by their guidance counselors. based on their accomplishments in scholarship, student activities and community service.

Rebecca Merkel is a senior at Brandywine Heights High school and the daughter of Teresa and Leroy Merkel, of Fleetwood. She has been active in the Choraliers, District Chorus, Regional Chorus and County Chorus, Student Council, holding the office of secretary, Volleyball, where she was co-captain and all-division player. While she was with the team, they won the state championship in 2011 and she was voted the Planers’ Player. She has also been active in the Asian Studies Club, Keystone Girl’s State and World Affairs Club.

In her church, she is in the youth group, and has worked on pot pie dinners, the church bazaar and mission trips.

During the school year and in the summer, she is employed with Katheryn’s Katering in Blandon.

Erika Matrone is a senior at Kutztown Area High School and is the daughter of Aleth and Frank Matrone of Kutztown. She has been active in the Book Club, the Dance Team, the Leo Club, the Bully Project, for which she served as president, the Poetry Club and the Math League.

In the community, she volunteers at Friend, Inc. and the Minithon, 2015. During the summer, she works at Dorney Park.
