Amy Carvalho, a senior at Twin Valley High School, was named March’s Intern of the Month. She currently interns at Twin Valley Elementary Center and Robeson Lutheran Preschool.

At Twin Valley Elementary, her mentors are Jaime Burns, a first grade teacher and Ann Nagel, a speech therapist. Her responsibilities there include working with the students who need help, assisting with the preparation of classroom materials, and helping to display student work. Carvalho’s a fan of how structured the first grade classroom is set up, as well. Burns really appreciates Carvalho being there.

“She is already working with students on their writing and assisting with clerical duties,” Burns said, “we look forward to watching Amy grow as a teacher this semester.”

Not only does Carvalho intern at Twin Valley Elementary, but also at Robeson Lutheran Preschool, with mentor Christina Raines. Carvalho has similar responsibilities at the preschool, but she gets to be more involved with the students. Like her mentors at the Elementary Center, the preschool appreciates Carvalho being an intern.

“Amy is an extraordinary student and an extremely hard worker. She is just wonderful with the students. She is such an asset in every classroom, bringing in different ideas and strategies to work with the children,” Raines stated. Carvalho is gaining great experience from these internships that will further her success in the future.

Raines then adds, “She works in all of our classrooms from toddlers to Pre-K and has really learned the differences of each age group. Amy is very confident in herself which is seen in all she does. She is loved by the students and the teachers alike. She is definitely on her way to becoming a very successful teacher!”

Carvalho’s neighbor, Kathy Milligan, was the one who invited her to intern at the preschool. Milligan assures that Carvalho will be successful.

“She is a role model, and not just for children, but for all ages. It’s a feeling that all of us teachers have with Amy. We just know. She has a gift. She has the gift of teaching,” Milligan stated. “It’s what she’s supposed to be doing, and we smile because we are proud of her for recognizing this in herself, and for being a gift to our children.”

Carvalho plans to become an early education teacher in the future. She plans on attending Reading Area Community College for an eighteen month program, then transferring to a university to finish out.

“There are certain people you meet in life that you just know, is, and should be, a teacher. That was Amy,” Milligan stated, “she is the nurturer, the one with patience, the one that smiles at silliness and finds childhood in general to be endearing. Children love her and want to be with her. Because of this, they listen, trust, and respect her.”

Congratulations Amy, March Intern of the Month!
