It’s that time of year again – Exeter PArks and Recreation along with the Exeter School District has announced “May Days.” This year’s festival will be held on Friday, May 15 from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., and Saturday from 1 p.m. until 10 p.m. at the Exeter High School, 201 East 37th Street, Reading.

Among the rides, games and food to be offered – there will also be a bake sale held for a cause close to one teen’s heart.

After six years of fundraising, Exeter’s Kyra Hoerr hopes this year to reach $12,000 raised for the Animal Rescue League.

At the age of eleven, Kyra held her first bake sale at Exeter May Days. Her sale is a two-day marathon of baking and selling, starting Friday morning with tent set-up and frenzied baking.

By Saturday night, she will have sold over fourteen dozen brownies, six pounds of penny candy, and countless cookies, cupcakes and marshmallow treats. A crew of volunteers pitches in to make it possible, many putting in back-to-back days of nine hours or more with her at the stand.

Starting with $435 in 2010, Kyra’s sale has raised more money each year, topping out at $1550 in 2013. Matching donations by private individuals and the Berks County Community Foundation have brought Kyra’s five-year total to $10,500.

This year, if all goes well, she hopes to hit $12,000 raised for senior and special needs animals in the Grey Muzzle Foster Program of the Animal Rescue League of Berks County. The program places senior and special needs dogs and cats with volunteer foster families to increase their odds of successful adoption. Since 2010, the program has saved the lives of more than 600 animals, placing hundreds in loving, permanent homes.

The bake sale will take place throughout the weekend carnival – admission is free to the public.

The fireworks display will take place Saturday night at 9:30 p.m. Proceeds from May Days benefit Exeter schools and a host of Exeter Township non-profits.
