A group of fifteen people, members of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Boyertown, travelled out to Reading to serve a meal at Hope Rescue Mission on Sunday, May 3.

The mission is a place of refuge for homeless men in Berks County. The group prepared the meal ahead of time at St. John’s and then served 95 men a delicious meal of ham, potato stuffing, green beans, corn, fruit cup, rolls and dessert. After the men were served the dinner, members of the Hope Rescue Mission served the group from St. John. The evening included fellowship and worship as well. It was an evening of mutual respect, conversation and service. The sharing of the meal is much more than just food, it is an opportunity for people to connect.

“It was an opportunity to serve neighbors in need with the love of Jesus. I can’t imagine a better reason to be involved,” said Sharon Smith of Boyertown. Everyone in the group is looking forward to returning to the Hope Rescue Mission in the near future.
