Friends and family gathered at Manatawny Manor, 30 Old Schuylkill Rd., Pottstown, on June 19 to celebrate Mrs. Dorothy Padfield’s 100th birthday.

Dorothy was born in 1915 in Gilbertsville the sixth of ten children, to William and Addie Zern. Her father, William, opened the iconic Zern’s Farmer’s Market in 1922.

Dorothy loves to talk of the fun she had growing up in a large family in the country. She also recalls the many chores involved in farm life. Dorothy states she has worked hard all her life – running her own paper route at 7 years of age and then working “the sale” (Zern’s Farmer’s Market). She surmises that may be a contributing factor to her reaching this birthday milestone.

Dorothy was married to the late Kermit Buchert and Ike Padfield; she is predeceased by her son, Lee Buchert and survived by her daughter, Lynda Garner.

Dorothy attended Shepherd of the Hills Church in Bechtelsville.

These days Dorothy enjoys music, bingo, trivia, and reading.

At her birthday celebration Dorothy was delighted to read aloud her birthday greetings from President Barack Obama, First Lady, Michelle Obama, and Congressman Ryan Costello to the party goers in attendance.
