LOWER POTTSGROVE >> The Sunnybrook Ballroom was filled with people Thursday as area residents did yoga in a chair, received free health screenings and visited vendor tables for the 2016 Healthy Lifestyles Expo.

The annual event was organized by state Rep. Tom Quigley, R-146th Dist., along with sponsors TriCounty Community Network, the Sunnybrook Ballroom and The Mercury.

Quigley started the expo when he was first elected to the state Legislature in 2004 as a senior health event but the healthy event eventually expanded to include all ages.

More than 60 vendors were at the expo discussing various health topics including dental care, nutrition and physical activity.

Community Health and Dental Outreach Coordinator Paula Kamp said the organization wanted to inform the public about all the resources they offer. The nonprofit health center has three locations in Pottstown. Kamp said they provide many services including nutrition education, medical, dental, behavioral health, prenatal and more.

“We’re just adding services all the time,” she said.

Recently the organization added vision services which will be offered full-time in July. Dr. Joel Messner, an optometrist, was at the expo Thursday giving eye exams.

“We’re just making sure that the residents and the people attending the event understand what services that we offer,” Kamp said.

In addition to a blood pressure reading and eye exam, people could also have their nervous system scanned.

“It’s a thermal energy machine that picks up off the heat that the nerves give off in the system,” said Lindsey Fox of McCormick Chiropractic in Pottstown.

Fox said chiropractors work with a lot more than just the neck and back. The nervous system scan can show what particular nerves are doing and how they influence the sleep pattern and more.

When people weren’t visiting the many vendor tables, they were attending workshops on subjects such as fall prevention, stroke and chest pain, and aging better.
