Members of Troop 1380 spent several hours last week working on a garden-themed mural at the New Hanover Recreation Center.

The mural can be found on one of the walls in a room for children events such as birthday parties.

“The plan this year is to do more for the community,” said Troop Leader Sue Seip.

Nearly twenty of the Troop’s Brownies, second and third graders, took time to work on the mural.

The Troop also helped to plant the community garden at the center a few weeks ago.

“We hope to do more with this recreation center – there’s a lot of opportunity here,” said Seip, noting that the Girl Scouts enjoy arts and crafts.

Seip explained that the girls are not only learning to do more, but they’re learning to do more on their own. For the mural, the Girl Scouts came up for five different ideas for a theme. Connie Garner of the New Hanover Parks and Rec. Department chose the garden theme, coinciding with the community garden.

The leader sketched out the image on the wall and the Scouts have been filling it in with bright colors.

Garner says she is thrilled about the mural. “It is beautiful. I always appreciate when people come in and volunteer to do projects. We could use all the volunteers we can get.”

The New Hanover Recreation Center is located at 2373 Hoffmansville Road.
