AMITY >> On Friday, Nov. 11, Amity Elementary Center held a Veterans Day program attended by 72 veterans.

The event brought a total of 150 guests as most of the veterans brought spouses or other members of their families. The day started with breakfast in the center’s cafeteria. Immediately following, the JROTC at Daniel Boone High School, under the supervision of Captain Shannon Helzer, presented the colors for “The Star Spangled Banner” along with Boy and Girl Scouts in uniform. The anthem was sung by the AEC Chorus, under the supervision of Mary Beth Gray. Erin Siegle’s second grade class performed the poem “Veteran’s Day” followed by “America, performed by the AEC Select Band under the supervision of Lori Snavely.

After the program, veterans were escorted to classrooms by their children and grandchildren. They spoke about their service to our country and answered questions by students and teachers. If you would like more pictures of individual veterans, let me know.

In addition to the veteran audience, Superintendent James Harris, Assistant Superintendent Rob Hurley, Special Education Director Shelly Mieczkowski, and high school Principal Preston McKnight (also a veteran) attended the ceremony.
