The 2017 Philadelphia Flower Show promises to be a grand spectacle. But it’s the little things, such as knowing how to get there and how to navigate the show, that can help make your day amid the beautiful blooms that much easier and delightful.

The old saying “It’s not the destination that matters, it’s the journey” doesn’t really apply here, because the flowers are really the thing, but there are ways to minimize the hassles of traveling to the Pennsylvania Convention Center, located at 12th and Arch streets in Philadelphia. Parking in the vicinity is always at a premium, so the wisest plan might be to take a SEPTA Regional Rail train or a bus – many train lines go to Jefferson Station, which is right below the Convention Center, and various bus routes will also take you right to the Center. Go to SEPTA.org to see schedules and plan your trip via public transportation. Additionally, you can park for free at SugarHouse Casino and take a free shuttle – which runs every hour on the hour – from the casino to the Convention Center.

If you intend to drive, the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS), which puts on the Flower Show, has partnered with the online parking reservations service Parking Panda to give visitors the opportunity to pre-purchase guaranteed parking within walking distance of the Convention Center. You can go to ParkingPanda.com for more details. There is also an online coupon available for $5 off parking at the Convention Center Parking Facility, where space is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Once you arrive, you’ll find that the Philadelphia Flower Show is easily accessible to those with disabilities. There are elevators and automated doors throughout the Center, and the show floor is level and very manageable for walking. Wheelchairs ($20) and electric scooters ($30 for up to four hours/$40 for four to 12 hours) are available to rent in the concourse outside of Hall A. Most restrooms are wheelchair-accessible.

PHS recommends that you plan on a visit lasting between four and five hours, which will give you enough time to see all the exhibits and attractions, perhaps watch one of the many presentations and do some shopping or get something to eat. The show is usually packed with visitors, particularly on the weekend, so if you prefer a smaller crowd, you’re advised to visit after 3 p.m. on weekdays (the Flower Show is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. during the week). You can also sign up for a two-hour Early Morning Tour, which is a private tour of the show with an expert guide before the Center opens to the public for the day – such tickets are available for $110, and if you’re interested, you’re advised to purchase them ASAP.

It’s also highly recommended that you take a look at a map of the Flower Show and the schedule of all the events, presentations and more in advance of your visit and create an itinerary so that you can maximize your time and see and do all of the things you want.

The exhibits, marketplace and other attractions typically cover more than 10 acres in just the main exhibition hall alone, so make sure you wear comfortable shoes! Visitors are also advised to dress in layers, as various parts of the show are cooler or warmer depending on the particular climate needs of the flowers and plants. There is a coat-check available at the top of the escalators when you arrive.

Organizers have made the Flower Show an exceedingly kid and family friendly event, but they encourage visitors to bring very young children in backpack-style carriers rather than strollers, when possible.

The Flower Show is visually stunning, and photography is not only permitted, it’s encouraged! However, so as not to block pathways and otherwise hinder the enjoyment of other visitors, camera tripods and monopods are strictly prohibited.

As in years past, there will be plenty of food options once inside the show, from simple-yet-gourmet cafe fare to vendors selling Philly favorites like cheesesteaks, soft pretzels, water ice and more. There will also be a pop-up beer garden and an especially relaxing spot for garden tea, where you can also nosh on smoked salmon, chicken salad on mini-croissants,and various scones and tarts.

Additionally, there are plenty of places throughout the Center to sit, rest and just enjoy the gorgeous surroundings!
