Albert S. Rodgers

Albert S. Rodgers, 75 of Hamburg died Dec. 5 in his home. He was the husband of Rosalie A. (Yanek) Rodgers to whom he was married to for 46 years.

Albert was born in Mahanoy City December 30, 1937 and was the son of the late Joseph and Mary (Lestusky) Rodgers.

He was a 1955 graduate of Mahanoy City High School and a graduate of Williamsport Technical School.

He attended the U.S. Army Ordinance Guided Missile School at Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville, Alabama and assisted in launching two Redstone Missiles. Albert served proudly in the United States Army in Germany during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He then worked for Dana Corporation for 32 years as an Electrical Electronic Technician. He was a member of St. Mary R.C. Church and its Holy Name Society.


In addition to his wife, he is survived by 2 children, Sharon Rodgers, Baltimore, MD., and Scott of Philadelphia and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother Leonard Rodgers.

A Mass of Christian Burial was be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. from St. Mary Church, 94 Walnut Road, PO Box 189, Hamburg. Burial was in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. A viewing was held in the church from 9:30 until 11 a.m. on Tuesday.

Arlan J. Miller, Jr.

Arlan J. Miller, Jr., 69, of Leesport, died Thursday, December 5, 2013 in St. Joseph Medical Center, Bern Township. Born in Kutztown, he was a son of the late Arlan J., Sr., and Helen R. (Seibert) Miller. He was employed as a supervisor and forklift operator by Fleetwood Snacks, Inc., Fleetwood, working in their Blandon plant for 27 years, retiring in 2006. Mr. Miller enjoyed hunting, fishing, baseball and football.

Survivors: Daughters, Sue A. (Miller), wife of Richard W. Paine, Leesport, Rabecca L. (Miller), wife of Craig Montgomery, Hazleton; son, Arlan J. Miller, III, Hazleton; sister, Myrtle (Miller), wife of Harold Weisner, Kutztown; five grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. He was predeceased by a brother, Richard L. Geiring, Sr., in 1995.

Funeral services were held Dec. 9 in Ludwick Funeral Homes, Inc., Kutztown, with Reverend Dr. Joseph A. Piscitelli officiating. Inurnment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Donald J. Dietrich

Donald J. Dietrich, 64, of Windsor Township died December 8, 2013, in St. Joseph’s Medical Center.

He was the husband of Darlene L. (Lutz) Dietrich.

Donald was born in West Reading and was the son of the late James S. and Mildred A. (Stump) Dietrich.

He was a United States Army Veteran of the Vietnam War.

Donald worked for the Hamburg Center in the heating plant for over 30 years, retiring in 1993.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a step son, Wes Heim, Windsor Township, a step daughter, Shelia wife of Ronald Herman, Hamburg, and 4 step grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Donald is also survived by two brothers, Robert E. Dietrich, Kutztown and David D. Dietrich, Lenhartsville.

Services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Elizabeth Mertz

Elizabeth Mertz, 93, of Muhlenberg Twp., died Friday, December 6, 2013 at ManorCare, Laureldale. She was the wife of Richard C. Mertz, who died December 22, 2009.

Born in Reading she was the daughter of the late William L. and S. Elsie (Gilmore) Drexel. Elizabeth worked as a clerk in area retail stores, last working at Burlington Coat Factory for a number of years. Elizabeth was a very devoted and loving mother to her family.

Surviving are two daughters: Sandra L. (Mertz) Ellis, wife of Robert L. Adams, Bern Twp., and Carole A. (Mertz) Wolfe, Muhlenberg Twp.; four grandchildren: Kerry, Kurt, Kimberly, and Kara; five great-grandchildren; a son-in-law: Henry Stoyer, Centre Twp.; a sister: Shirley Diller, Atlanta, GA; and a brother in law: Leon Mertz, husband of Sue Ann Mertz. Elizabeth was predeceased by a daughter: Sharon S. (Mertz) Stoyer, who died November 15, 2008; a brother: Earl Wolfe; and Anthony M. Zaffiro, companion of Carole Wolfe.

Services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 11 at 12 noon from the Chapel at Laureldale Cemetery. Burial will follow in Laureldale Cemetery.
