Eleanor A. (Silsdorf) Freed, 90, of West Chester, formerly of Bowers, died Monday, Feb. 24, 2014 in Brandywine Hall Genesis HealthCare, West Chester, Chester County. She was the widow of Lloyd H. Freed who died Aug. 15, 1994.

Born at her parents farm in Bowers, she was a daughter of the late Frederick and Beulah (DeLong) Silsdorf.

Except for the last few years, she lived her entire life in Bowers.

She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church.


Mrs. Freed first worked as a seamstress at the former Wenton Shoe Factory, Kutztown and a sewing machine operator at the former Deisher Knitting Mills, Kutztown until her retirement in 1985.

She was a member and past president of the Bowers Lioness Club; enjoyed traveling to new places; vacationing in the Poconos; playing cards with her card club in Bowers; and playing bingo. Mrs. Freed was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliaries of the Lyons Fire Company No. 1, and Kutztown Fire Company No. 1.

Survivors: Son, Robert L,. husband of Nelly (Prinz) Freed, West Chester. Other survivors include sisters, Shirley (Silsdorf), widow of Clifford Youse, Las Vegas, N.V., Dorothy (Silsdorf), wife of Aaron DeWalt, Troy, Bradford County and Mary Ann (Silsdorf), wife of James Bond, Colorado Spring, Colo. There are also two grandchildren, Erika P. Freed, Brooklyn, N.Y. and Peter R. P., husband of Sarah C. (Urbine) Freed, Downingtown. She was predeceased by brothers, Ralph Silsdorf and Lee Silsdorf.

Funeral services were March 1, at 11 a.m. at Hope Lutheran Church, 550 Fleetwood Road, Bowers, with Reverend Elizabeth A. Haines officiating. Interment at Union Cemetery of Bowers will be private at the convenience of the family. Relatives and friends were welcome to call Saturday in the church. Grace M. Shetter, 90, of Alburtis, died Feb. 25, 2014 at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Twp. She was the wife of the late Ira D. Shetter.

Born in Trexlertown, she was a daughter of the late Harold R. and Pearl M. (Held) Ziegler.

Before retiring, she worked at Kraft Foods for nearly 20 years. Prior, she and her husband worked on the family farm for 25 years.

She was a member of St. Paul’s UCC, Trexlertown. She was a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star, East Penn Chapter No. 336.

Survivors: Daughter, Susan Shetter of Alburtis, foster daughter, Ellen Truitt of Allentown. She was predeceased by infant daughters, Brenda and Nancy, and sister Pauline P. Schmoyer Bortz.

Services were 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 1, at Schmoyer Funeral Home, 8926 Brookdale Rd., Breinigsville. Calling at 9:30 a.m. Burial at St. Paul’s Cemetery, Trexlertown.

Lawrence Burns Dinsmore died at Keystone Villa in Blandon, March 3, 2014, where he had been living for the past 11 months. He was a long time resident of Richhill Township and East Finley Township and for many years a rural mail carrier from the West Finley Post Office.

Mr. Dinsmore was born Dec. 16, 1915 in Waynesburg, a son of John Mordecai and Goldie Burns Dinsmore. He attended elementary school in Richhill Township and graduated in 1933 from Trinity High School in Washington, PA.

He is a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Merchant Marines, 1937-1945, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He served in the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Pacific theaters of the war.

At the end of the war, he returned to his grandfather’s farm in Richhill Township. First he raised registered Angus beef cattle, later he operated the first Christmas tree farm in Greene County. In 1951 Mr. Dinsmore was appointed Rural Carrier in the U.S. Postal Service serving West Finley Route #2 for 27 years. He served on the Richhill Township Planning Commission and the Richhill Township Watershed Board.

He was a member of Harvey’s Grange, the Graysville Knights of Pythias, the Fort Jackson Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, the American Legion Post 0945, and the Superstition Mountain Historical Society of Apache Junction, Arizona.

In 1935 he married Eldora Barnhart, who is deceased. In 1945 he married Neysa Elwell, deceased. In 1977 he married Betty Cox Barnhart who died in 2002. Surviving are his children, Anita Griesenauer of Safford, AZ; Norma (Rich) McClelland of Washington, PA; Patricia (Bill) Colvin of Dover, DE; Doug (Sarah Seidensticker) Dinsmore of Hamburg, PA; Betty (Denny) Morrow of Youngwood, PA; and Ronald (Deanna) Barnhart of Medina, OH; 18 grandchildren; 24 great- grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren.

Preceding Mr. Dinsmore in death were a daughter, Betty Jean McFall; son Donald (Johnny) Barnhart, his brother Donald T. Dinsmore; and two grandsons, Randy McFall and Tristan Griesenauer.

The decedent requested no viewing, and a graveside service. Grace B. Phillips, 81 of Centre Township died March 2, 2014 in her residence.

She was the widow of Stanley G. Phillips who died in 1998. Grace was born in Penn Township and was the daughter of the late Walter J. and Pearl (Wagner) Boltz. She was a homemaker most of her life.

Grace was a member of Belleman’s Church, Mohrsville.

She is survived by her 5 children: Linda wife of Larry Ludwig, Shillington, Rick Phillips, Lenhartsville, Sherry wife of Kenneth Weist, Mohrsville, Cindy wife of Jake Rohrbach, Oley and Randy husband of Cathleen Phillips, Mohrsville. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 1 great grandson, 2 step grandchildren and 3 step great grandchildren. Additionally, Grace is survived by 3 brothers: Edwin husband of Florence Boltz, Auburn, Kenneth husband of Judy Boltz, Mohrsville, Leon husband of Christine Boltz, Lenhartsville and 3 sisters: Arlene widow of Charles Smith, Centerport, Mabel widow of Stanley Rentschler, Tilden Township and Miriam wife of Ronald Haas, Mohrsville.

A memorial service will be held from the Burkey & Driscoll Funeral Home, Inc. 40 S. 4th Street, Hamburg on Saturday, March 8 at 11 a.m. A visitation with the family will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Burial will be private.
