RICHARD L. HERTZOG

Richard L. Hertzog, 78, of Topton, died Wednesday, April 9, 2014 in The Lutheran Home at Topton, where he was a resident since March. He was the husband of Mae J. (Funk) Hertzog, they were married October 8, 1955.

Born in Topton, he was a son of the late Herbert E. and Elda M. (Guinther) Hertzog.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Topton. He was a United States Army veteran serving during the Korean War. Mr. Hertzog was the owner and operator of the former Hertzog Trucking in the early 1960s as a contract operator for Kreitz Motor Express, Hamburg, for many years. He then worked for Morris Kreitz and Sons, Wyomissing for more than 20 years. He then was the owner and operator of Hertzog’s Hauling, Topton from 1985 until his retirement in 1997.

Mr. Hertzog was a member of Kutztown, Topton, and Lyons fire companies; and a legionnaire member of Ray A. Master Post 217, American Legion, Topton. He loved spending time with his friends and family.

Survivors: He is survived by his wife of 58 years; daughters, Wanda L. (Hertzog), wife of Terry K. Kemp, Boyertown, Brenda L. (Hertzog), wife of Scott K. Younger, Mertztown and Sherry L. (Hertzog), wife of Brian M. Sacks, Fleetwood; sons, Terry L., husband of Bonnie L. (Hess) Hertzog, Downingtown, PA, and Barry L., husband of Donna L. (Rex) Hertzog, Mertztown. Other survivors include a sister, Shirley L. (Hertzog), wife of George King, Hamburg; brothers, Carl H. Hertzog, companion of Loretta Weiser, Topton, Dennis G. Hertzog, Kutztown, Noel P. husband of Patricia (Miller) Hertzog, Kutztown. There are eleven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. He was predeceased by brothers Donald Hertzog, Leon Hertzog, Warren Hertzog, and Wayne Hertzog.

Funeral services Saturday, April 12, at 11:30 a.m. from Ludwick Funeral Homes, Inc., 25 East Weis Street, Topton, with Reverend Scott A. Staub, officiating. Interment, with military honors provided by Ray A Master Post 217, American Legion Honor Guard, Topton, will follow in Longswamp Union Cemetery, Mertztown. Friends could call Saturday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the funeral home.

JEAN B. RHODE

Jean B. (Romig) Rhode, 85, of Lewisburg, formerly of Topton, died Sunday, April 6, 2014 in Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg.

She was the widow of GlenRoy W. Rhode who died October 1, 1992.

Born in Longswamp Township, she was the daughter of the late Harry G. and Pearl A. (Eck) Romig.

Mrs. Rhode was a member of Longswamp United Church of Christ, Mertztown.

She was a graduate of Kutztown Area High School. Mrs. Rhode was employed as a clerk and bookkeeper by Arlan R. Christ, Kutztown, from 1982 until her retirement in 1997. Prior to that, she worked in the same capacity for Mr. Christ’s predecessor, Howard J. Dietrich, Accountant, Kutztown, for 36 years.

Mrs. Rhode was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, East Penn Chapter #336, Kutztown, where she served as a Flag Bearer, Marshall, Ruth, Esther, and Electa. Jean loved her family, and her family dearly loved her.

Survivors: Nephew, Reverend Michael C., husband of Ruth (Wertz) Romig, Mifflinburg, Union Co.; sister-in-law, Ruth S. (Conrad) Romig, Lewisburg, widow of predeceased brother, Carl H. Romig; great nieces, Joanna E. (Romig), wife of Fletcher Robinson, Oakville Ontario, Canada, and Bethany S. Romig, Watertown, Mass.; great-great niece, Raelynne; and great-great nephew, Decklan.

Memorial services will be held Friday, April 18, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in Ludwick Funeral Homes, Inc., 25 East Weis Street, Topton, with Reverend Dr. Katherine E. Brearley officiating. Inurnment will follow in Longswamp Union Cemetery, Mertztown. Relatives and friends may call Friday afternoon from 1:30 to 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home.

FLORENCE M. PHILLIPS

Florence M. (Tustin) Phillips, 83, of Rockland Township, died April 8, 2014, in The Lutheran Home at Topton. She was the widow of Michael P. Phillips, who died July 3, 2012.

She was a daughter of the late George and Florence (Devitt) Tustin.

Mrs. Phillips was a member of Saint Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Kutztown, where she was a member of the Ladies Faith Sharing Group. Mrs. Phillips was employed as a Nurse’s Aide at The Reading Hospital & Medical Center, West Reading, for over 20 years until her retirement in 1995.

Survivors: Sons, Michael P., Jr., husband of Velda (Howe) Phillips, Fort Thompson, SD and Timothy M. husband of Stephanie A. (Sutton) Phillips, Mertztown; daughters, Susan M. (Phillips) Geist-Bailey widow of William C. Bailey, Westfield, Tioga County and Eileen B. (Phillips) widow of Gregory A. Geist, Lawrenceville, Tioga County. Other survivors include a sister, Gertrude (Tustin) Nolen, a resident at Pennsburg Manor, Pennsburg. There are also ten grandchildren, seven step grandchildren; seven great grandchildren and eight step great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a brother, George Tustin.

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at 9:45 a.m. from Saint Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, 14833 Kutztown Road, Kutztown, 19530, with Rev. Msgr. Walter T. Scheaffer as celebrant. Inurnment will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, Lebanon County. Friends may call 8:45 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. in the church. STANLEY R. GEIGER

Stanley R. Geiger, 91, formerly of Kutztown, died April 9, 2014 in The Lutheran Home at Topton. He was the widower of Florence M. (Gallmoyer) Geiger who died in 1974.

Born in Kutztown, he was a son of the late John and Gertrude (Meitzler) Geiger.

Stanley was a member of Saint John’s United Church of Christ, Kutztown. He was a United States Navy Veteran serving in World War II, and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Kutztown. Mr. Geiger was employed as a sheet metal worker by Mack Trucks, Inc., Allentown, for over 40 years until his retirement in 1984.

Survivors: Daughters, Diane L. (Geiger), wife of Edward German, Kutztown, Barbara A. (Geiger), wife of Michael Keck, Kempton, Cathy A. (Geiger), wife of Michael S. Berg, Blandon, Laurie K. Geiger, Fleetwood, and Lisa J. Geiger, companion of Bruce D. Adam, Fleetwood. Other survivors include grandchildren, Beth Kern, Scott German, Jennifer Tabor, Chuck Hoch and Christopher Berg; and great grandchildren, Tyler Johnson, Cecelia and Genevieve Tabor, Ryan and Robyn Hoch and Tristan Berg.

He was predeceased by three sisters and four brothers.

Funeral services will be held Monday, April 14, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. from Ludwick Funeral Homes, Inc., 333 Greenwich Street, Kutztown, with Reverend Corrine R. Dautrich officiating. LANCE E. JAMES

Lance E. James, 70, of Topton, died peacefully Wednesday, April 9, 2014 in his residence. He was the husband of Paulette A. (DeLong) “Cooky” James. They were married September 23, 1967. Born in Allentown, he was a son of the late Henri A. and Frances J. (Kern) James. Mr. James was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Topton, where he was a former past president and member of the church council, and a lay minister. He was a 1961 graduate of Kutztown Area High School and attended Kutztown University. Mr. James was a United States Marine veteran serving as a Lance Corporal during the Vietnam War.

He was employed as an inspector by APD Cryogenics, Allentown, and Air Products, Inc., Trexlertown for over 25 years. Most recently, he was employed as a delivery driver by Rite Aid, Kutztown for three years, and a driver for Hertz Car Rental, Allentown, for over five years. Lance held various positions in the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (I.A.M. & A.W.) No. 917. He was a member Huguenot Lodge #337 F. & A.M., Kutztown; Ray A. Master Post 217, American Legion, Topton; a member of the consumer advisory council for Capital Blue Cross for over 20 years; played a significant role in starting Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP); and was a member of the Marine Corps Drill Instruction Association. He was also influential in starting the Men’s Ministry group at Trinity Lutheran Church, Topton. Lance was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who loved western movies, slapstick comedy, and “pun” jokes.

He was also an avid supporter of his grandchildren’s athletic activities; and was a die-hard Minnesota Vikings fan. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Survivors: Wife; daughters, Holly B. James, fiancé of Tracy N. Loader, Exeter Twp., Hope M. (James), wife of Mike F. Distasio, Oley, Rachel D. James, Topton; son, L. Eric, II, husband of Jennifer N. (Karlin) James, Rapid City, South Dakota; sisters Heather J. (James), wife of Robert Howell, Mohnton, Erin D. (James), widow of Forrest Hertzog, Topton. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Kayla A. Distasio, Frankie C. Distasio, Kazandra Loader, Nick M. Distasio, Natalia M. Distasio, and Sal Distasio. He was predeceased by a sister Wendy J. (James) Musselman.

Memorial services April 14, at 11:00 a.m. in Trinity Lutheran Church, 121 South Home Avenue, Topton, with Reverend Scott A. Staub and Reverend Arthur L. Hahn officiating. Military honors, provided by Ray A. Master Post 217, American Legion Honor Guard, Topton, will be rendered following the service. Inurnment will be private at the convenience of the family. Relatives and friends could call Monday morning in the church.

WALTER M. “MARK” FOX

Walter M. “Mark” Fox, III, 21, of Mertztown, died unexpectedly, Saturday, April 12, 2014, at the residence of a friend in Topton. Born in Reading, he was a son of Walter Markley Fox, Jr., of Pottstown, and the late Doris L. Bartholomew, who died in 2011. Mark was a 2010 graduate of Brandywine Heights High School, Topton. He worked for various companies in the area through temporary labor services.

Survivors: Father; maternal grandparents, William C., and Joan J. (Zimmerman) Bartholomew, Mertztown, with whom he resided; sister, Megan L. Fox, at home.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. from Ludwick Funeral Homes, Inc., 25 East Weis Street, Topton, with Reverend Arthur L. Hahn officiating. JOAN E. SHADE

Joan E. Shade, 75, passed away April 9, 2014 in her Kutztown residence surrounded by her family. She was the wife of Wayne A. Shade.

Joan was born in Richmond Township a daughter of the late Clayton and Katie (Grim) Reed.

Survived in addition to her husband by a daughter Diane K. wife of Robert Rarick, Bowers; two sons, Wayne A. husband of Cheryl, Minden, Nevada; Solon A. husband of Heidi, Topton; five grandchildren; brother Clayton S. husband of Mary, Fleetwood; sister Eleanor C. wife of David Merkel, Kutztown.
