Ernest R. Mertz, 84, of Richmond Township, died Monday, April 28, 2014 in Kutztown Manor, Inc., Kutztown, where he was a resident for almost two years. He was the husband of Arline P. (Dietrich) Mertz, whom he married September 24, 1949. Born in Maxatawny Township, he was a son of the late Raymond and Mabel (Wartzenluft) Mertz. He was a member of Saint Johnís Lutheran Church, Kutztown. Mr. Mertz was employed as a carpenter by the Lehigh Valley District Council, Bethlehem, for many years, until his retirement in 1994. He was a member of the Kutztown Rod and Gun Club, where he helped with trap shooting. He was also a member of the Kutztown Fire Company, Perry Township Game Association, Lenhartsville Fish and Game, Pikeville Sportsmans Association, and the National Rifle Association. Ernest enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors: Wife, son, Eric R., husband of Amy L. (DeLong) Mertz, Kutztown; sisters, Bernice (Mertz) Sayer, Laila (Mertz) Sousley, and Joanne (Mertz) Albright; brother, Kenneth Mertz. There are also two grandchildren, Kourtney Shafer and Miranda Shafer; and a great grandson, Hunter Kline.

Memorial services will be held Friday, May 2, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. from Ludwick Funeral Homes, Inc., 333 Greenwich Street, Kutztown, with Reverend Donald B. Landis officiating. Inurnment will follow in Zion Moselem Church Cemetery, Kutztown. Relatives and friends may call Friday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home.

Virginia C. Bower, 80, formerly of Fleetwood, died May 2, 2014, in Saint Joseph Medical Center, Bern Township, where she was a patient since April 27, 2014. She was admitted there from Berks Heim, where she resided two years.

Born in Maxatawny Township, she was a daughter of the late William H. and Edith M. (Stern) Bower.

Virginia was a member of Christ (Mertz) Lutheran Church, (Dryville), Fleetwood. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and enjoyed playing bingo.

Survivors: Sister, Nancy B. (Bower) widow of Edward C. Gieringer, Jr., Fleetwood; brother-in-law Edwin C. Isamoyer, Fleetwood, widower of predeceased sister, Charlotte J. (Bower) Isamoyer. She was also predeceased by brothers, William C. and Daniel S. Bower. Other survivors include Nieces, Artena Unger, Marcy Moyer, Tonya Ludy, Angie Moyer and Desiree Heller; nephews, Kurt and Kevin Gieringer, Wes Bower and Heath Isamoyer, Sr. There are many great nieces and great nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 8, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. from Ludwick Funeral Homes, Inc., 333 Greenwich Street, Kutztown, with Reverend Cheryl F. Meinschein, officiating. Helen M. (Dietrich) Moyer, 83, formerly of Temple, died peacefully Thursday, May 1, at 3:08 p.m. in the St. Josephís Medical Center. She was the widow of Lawrence E. Moyer, who died February 10, 2012.

Helen was born in Richmond Township on August 12, 1930, the daughter of the late Pious E. and Ida M. (Hottenstein) Dietrich.

A craftswoman specializing in quilted pillows, Helen participated in the Fairgrounds Square Mallís craft shows. She and her husband volunteered with the picnics at Salem (Bellemanís) Church, Centre Township.

Surviving are the following children; Carl L. husband of Sharon F. (Hafer) Moyer of Rockland Township; Leroy E. husband of Lyn (Colandrea) Moyer of Summit, NJ; Ernest L. husband of Joan E. (Reeder) Moyer of Mechanicsburg; Steven E. Moyer of Hamburg; Joyce M. wife of Glenn W. Krick of Exeter Township; and Deborah E. wife of Michael W. Sonon of Adamstown.

Helen is also survived by a brother, Harold Dietrich of Perry Township, and a sister, Dorothy McLaughlin of Tilden Township.

She is predeceased by three brothers, Earl (2008), Raymond (2010), and James (2013) Dietrich, and a sister, Catherine Stern (2013).

There are ten grandchildren: Jennifer L. (Moyer) wife of Joseph Demers of Middletown, CT; Melissa A. Moyer of Austin, TX; Stephanie M. (Krick) wife of Lyle Hinsdale of Big Sandy, TX; Allison G. & Erin L. Moyer of Mechanicsburg; Lawrence F. Moyer of Morristown, TN; Matthew S. and Nicholas E. Moyer of Hamburg; Kevin husband of Jamie Sonon of Adamstown; and Christopher husband of Randi Sonon of Morristown, TN; and six great grandchildren: Justin, Savannah, Addison, Jackson, Kooper, and Colton.

Funeral services from the Milkins Giles Funeral Home, Inc., Temple, were Saturday. Interment was private in St. Peterís Cemetery, Richmond Township.
