Last week I had a fleeting thought. It was so brief and fleeting that I never really considered it to be a viable option for my to do list, but it did pass through my brain. I can blame it on being too busy and having too few hours in the day but the truth is, I just don’t care.

Next week my husband and I are planning a little getaway to historic Gettysburg for his birthday. I’ve been looking for things to do in the area and searching for places to eat other than Wendy’s. It’s just a short little trip, nothing extravagant but I still like to plan a bit ahead. In the process of thinking about the weekend I had my fleeting thought. “I should paint my nails.” There it was, a tiny impression that going away with my husband called for a bit of extra cosmetic attention, and then I immediately talked myself out of it.

There are many more reasons not to paint my nails than there are reasons to do it. Here are just a few of the things I told myself to quickly suppress this momentary impulse.

#1) If I paint my nails I have to sit still for approximately a half hour. If I’m sitting still, I typically want to knit. If my nails are wet with nail polish, I can’t knit, thereby making my time sitting still pointless. (I know that was a few thoughts strung together, but they were completely related so they all count as one item.)

#2) If I paint my nails, all the nail polish will be gone after I do the dishes once anyway. (Yes, I try to avoid doing dishes whenever possible but sometimes it just can’t be helped. It is inevitable that I will do dishes and thereby waste an entire coat of nail polish.)

#3) I hate the way nail polish smells.

#4) My husband couldn’t care less about whether or not my nails are painted. In fact it is doubtful that he would even take notice so there is no great motivation to bother.

#5) I am a really poor nail painter and tend to paint more of my finger than my nail anyway making my hands look like my cat painted my nails.

These are all fine reasons for quickly dispensing with the notion of painting my nails, don’t you agree? I will be completely honest with you. I just don’t see the point. I was clearly poorly trained in the finer arts of cosmetic use which has left my dear daughter on her own to be mentored by her girlfriends in this discipline. I am not a make-up user either which is a whole other story. I guess I just don’t think about it or care to invest the time and energy in these superficial pursuits. Not that they are wrong or bad, I am pretty much just lazy. I figure that if I’m stuck with this genetic code, you all will just have to put up with it as well! (wink)
