To quote a popular book series, and movie franchise, “May the odds be ever in your favor” this holiday shopping season! It’s down to less than a full month left to find those hard to find, perfectly unique gifts for those on your list. And to add to the stress for some, and joy for others, is the trips to the popular shopping spots which includes not only long lines of people questioning just how much of a discount they should be getting, but also the dreaded parking lot experiences.

If you can’t tell yet, I’m not the biggest shopper out there. I don’t have that killer instinct to grab the last “it” item and run off with it. Instead, I’m actually quite passive and enjoy observing more than anything. That being said, this was my second year participating in “Brown Thursday” or “Grey Thursday,” depending on who you ask, and then “Black Friday” followed by one of my absolutely favorites “Small Business Saturday.” At the time of writing this, I haven’t decided if “Cyber Monday” is in the cards for me this year or not. Though I did answer my own question as to why it isn’t “Cyber Sunday” since sometimes you just need a break.

I take great pride in being able to find a gift that the recipient will not only love, but will also not stop talking about. On top of that, it should be a fairly priced gift that they cannot get just anywhere.

My shopping starts early. And most of the time with no specific item in mind. Even for birthdays, I tend to go with the flow and wait until something sticks out. Luckily, my job allows me to broaden my horizons with all sorts of craft shows and events that have local and traveling vendors. What I love about these craft shows and shopping at the small, local businesses is getting to know the people. You have a chance to talk to the artist or vendor and make a quick friend. And chances are this is a gift that your friend or family member cannot run to the next big department store and buy. Needless to say, if you ever want to find me on the weekends in the winter, chances are pretty high I’m at some craft show.

Last year, I had a goal in mind for “Black Friday” shopping (on Thursday). This year it was more about just going out and continuing a new tradition. My shopping buddy and I had a great time and found many surprising items that are now somewhere in our homes between our Thursday and Friday outings.

Then it was time to work on part of that list for my friends and family on “Small Business Saturday.” Some of these buys were items that I had in mind, while others were spur of the moment. Part of what I love about living in this area is the amount of options when it comes to the small businesses. I always find something and quite a few things to add as a “come back and get later.”

To all of those who have shopped, are just starting, or are finishing up, I wish you the best of luck this holiday shopping season. Remember to be kind and thankful to those associates who are helping you. Don’t forget to stop by some of your favorite local spots to chat with the owners and find that unique, one-of-a-kind gift. Have fun and be safe out there!
