For those of you who follow my column you might remember that I call my grandchildren the ‘farmers ‘& the ‘entertainers’.

My farmers Josh and Caleb are the Morganites, and my entertainers Julia and Landon are the Muhlenbergers.

I vacationed with the farmers over the Memorial Day weekend in Washington, D.C. and Arlington, Va. Lots of fun and an educational trip.

June 13 I was ready to journey down south to Myrtle Beach with the entertainers.

My grandson Landon called me to request the music I wanted on the CD he was preparing for the trip down.

Hmm … I said, “Happy “, “Clap Along if you feel like a room without a roof” and of course we clapped along. Next, Pink’s “So what”, “I’m gonna start a fight”, thank goodness I didn’t start a fight.

In addition to Elvis favorites and their pop favorites we had great driving music. The DVDs in the back of the van were set up so we could watch the movie “Les Miserables.” Landon does a great rendition of “Master of the House.” Both Landon and Julia are involved in the theater an act, sing and dance.

Landon has written the lyrics and preformed his first song,” Not that Hard for You”, accompanied by Julia Mackey who collaborated with the music. They had a standing ovation at Muhlenburg HS talent contest.

Yes they take it very seriously. You can always hear singing and humming along with tapping around the house. So off we were to South Carolina and the Ocean.

The first day after unloading our gear in the pretty townhouse we crashed from the long drive.

The next day the warnings blared from the TV. Shark Attack on South Carolina Beach. And the following day another Attack. Both were just about 30 miles from Myrtle Beach.

The ocean was the temperature of bath water and we were roasting in over 101 degree sunshine. How is it that kids have no fear? “Watch your toes kids, those sharks are coming all the way in, the people that got bit were in knee high and waist high water.

I stayed in the pool. My daughter Lori and her husband Craig had kid patrol in the ocean. They all got beautiful tans, swam to their heart’s content and played in the surf.

Then the TV blurted out “Nine Killed at Historic Emanuel Church in Charleston, South Carolina”.

I guess I am so programmed into the news that I have to know what is going on. My daughter has learned to shield the kids from today’s trauma which is a constant anxiety producer for kids.

How cable TV has changed the world. The Disney Channel is fodder for Julia and her dancing and singing and the Voice and Dancing with Stars help to feed Landon the lyricist, musician, and actor.

It is always a fun time with the entertainers. We are back home now and I watched the funeral with President Obama singing ‘Amazing Grace’ and the kids are already practicing for the play Oz with Rainbow Theater.

And me well I am humming and singing and still watching my toes.

And what did you do for vacation? Any good stories out there?
