Guest Column: Say ‘Hello’ and smile at everyone, make them smile

Oh my, I forgot 70 comes after 69 (Senior Moment). 70 years old, why that is almost “OLDER THEN DIRT.” No actually it is just a number.

I will be honest. I cannot believe I am 70. Do not feel that I am 70, but do not know how I am supposed to feel. I take that back. I will tell you how I feel, blessed.

I am a very lucky lady. I am not blessed with wealth. I have been blessed with something money cannot buy, my health, which can change very quickly, so each day I thank God for what I have.

Many of my friends are retired. I work 35 to 40 hours a week, helping senior citizens to live their lives in their own homes, taking them to doctor appointments, cooking a meal, making sure they have healthy meals, but most of all putting a smile on their faces. It is sort of funny, I also am a senior.

My friends will say they feel sorry for me that I am still working. DON’T ever feel sorry for me and never feel sorry for yourself. I have learned to live my life like the movie “Pollyanna,”a Disney movie with Haley Mills. When something bad happens, always remember it could be worse.

I know now you all know I am totally CRAZY, and maybe I am but I will tell you one thing. I have lived through a lot of rough times and I made it. I continue to struggle at times (we all do ) but when I feel down and out of it, I go visit someone that is worse off than me and put a smile on their face.

I play a special game everyday. I make three people smile. People I do not know. Try it whereever you are. Say, “Hello” and give them a big smile and watch what happens. Some people will look at you like you are crazy but 90 percent of the time they will smile back. It becomes a virus, one we all need to spread.

It’s 2:13 p.m. I guess I need to start getting ready for an evening with my family and friends. Hmm, by 5:30 p.m. I should look ok. One more thing is what you see is what you get. So get used to it. I ain’t changing no way. A new chapter in my life has just begone. Look out world here I come.

Love ya all, from the little farm girl that became a “Queen,” Ms. Pennsylvania Senior America 2012.
