Mass shootings become indelibly seared in our memories, much like Columbine, Sandy Hook, Orlando, Las Vegas, Parkland, etc. Sadly, there undoubtedly will be more to come.

The ghastly Florida school shooting is yet another tragic example of innocent lives lost because politicians inexcusably fail to impose reasonable gun controls.

Granted, banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines won’t end shootings, but it will reduce the severity and perhaps frequency of these attacks. Evil comes around too often. We don’t need to arm it with military-style weapons.

Haven’t we all had enough of this needless violence that wrenches your heart, percolates the bile in your liver and makes you scream for some measure of increased gun control?

Our society is steeped in raw violence, its moral compass cracked like an egg.

Too many lives in America are circling the drain because of the politics of guns in this country. There are people who say that the bad guys always will have guns, so we too need guns to protect ourselves. That’s the answer? Let everybody pack? Pack a lunch and a Glock?

Banning all guns is a pipe dream but we can ban assault weapons that have no business in the hands of civilians.

There always will be killers, mental cases and wackos out there but they’ll kill a lot fewer people if they are not carrying an AR-15 style rifle. Forbidding the sale of such weapons takes away the means to cause such carnage.

The AR-15 and its close relatives have been involved in the deadliest mass shootings in the U.S. since 2012.

Hunters need their rifles just like golfers need their clubs but they don’t need assault weapons. Deer don’t shoot back. A mere rifle will do just fine.

Forbid the sale of assault guns and do our best to caulk the ooze of black market artillery poisoning our land from overseas.

In addition to more restrictive firearms laws, we need to shore up the lapses in background checks and law enforcement’s response to warnings of concerning behavior.

As a society, we’ve got too much blood on our hands and it will never wash off. Hot lead shouldn’t be getting frequent flyer miles in a civilized society.

It is way past time for our elected officials to do the right thing and put up a barricade between lunatics with itchy trigger fingers and assault weapons.
