This year showcased the family band.

All bands were family members. The first band up on stage was the Martin Sisters bringing Western Swing.

"We heard the Quebe Sisters and we totally fell in love with their music and it's so much fun and full of energy.

<![CDATA[Hamburg teachers serve up ice cream to raise funds for American Cancer Society]]> A long line winded through and outside of Candy's Homemade Icecream shop in Shoemakersville on Friday night, Sept. 19. Students, their families and the community waited for some familiar faces to serve up their favorite frozen treats as teachers from Hamburg Area Middle School, Perry Elementary Center and Tilden Elementary Center took their turns behind the counter, all to help raise money for the American Cancer Society.

<![CDATA[Salem EC Church hosts sixth annual Pig Roast and Car Show]]> People from all over, local and not so local, made their way to Salem EC Church in Lenhartsville on Saturday, Sept. 20, for the sixth annual Pig Roast and Car Show.

The fun, family friendly event featured a car show including classic vehicles, hot rods and new this year motorcycles. Attendees were asked to vote for their favorite with the three most popular cars and three most popular motorcycles winning plaques and prizes.

<![CDATA[Recital to help raise funds to repair and maintain Dieffenbach organs in Berks]]> A benefit organ recital will be held on Friday, Sept. 26 at Altalaha Lutheran Church, Rehrersburg, to raise funds to repair and maintain Dieffenbach organs located in Berks County churches. Playing Altalaha's historic organ that dates back to 1817 will be Adam Dieffenbach, a descendent of the original builder.

<![CDATA[ArtFusion celebrates latest educational exhibit]]> The greater Pottstown community was recently invited to the opening of ArtFusion 19464's latest educational exhibit: Rainbow Crow and Other Stories. The exhibit features artwork inspired by Native American stories. Each participating artist have created a piece in their favorite medium, which range from clay to recycled cans to traditional acrylic and oil paints.

<![CDATA[Indian Fort Inn honors first responders, raises funds for Derrick Redcay]]> Indian Fort Inn, in Tilden Twp., honored first responders and raised funds for the Redcay Strong fund during their First Responders Day on Saturday, Sept. 20.

The event was organized by Sandra Bixler, Indian Fort Inn manager, whose father was part of the Fleetwood Fire Department. Part of Bixler's job is to come up with events to bring more people to the restaurant and create new business.

<![CDATA[Schuylkill Valley Community Library's 'Race to Read' has a successful third year despite weather]]> Reading and running came together at Schuylkill Valley Community Library, in Leesport, for the third annual Race to Read on Saturday, Sept. 13. Rain may have threatened the race and fun run, but the weather held off for both events.

Next to the train tracks by the library, 82 runners lined up at the starting line (and finish line) of the 5K race and waited as the countdown began.

<![CDATA[Schuylkill Valley class of 1964 celebrates 50th reunion]]> Schuylkill Valley class of 1964 held its "50th Class Reunion" on Saturday, Aug. 16. The reunion was held at Giannotti's Country Manor on Pricetown Road. Dinner, music by The Dogs of Falkner Swamp, prize and surprises were enjoyed by all. The class graduated 104 students. Forty-two classmates were in attendance as well as spouses and dates for a total of 61 attendees.

She and her husband Michael own Uncle Paul's Stuffed Pretzels and won the People's Choice Award at this year's Taste of Hamburg-er Festival. Last year they were the Grand Champion of the Best Burger contest. Sandra Christman was the program chairperson.

<![CDATA[Oley holds 68th annual community fair]]> The Oley Fair was a must-see stop last weekend, with countless items to see and events to check out.

A team of administrators has worked diligently alongside volunteers to present the 68th Annual Oley Valley Community Fair last weekend, Sept 19 to 20, at the Oley Fairgrounds.

New events at this year's fair included a Lego contest and the pumpkin weigh-off.

Sept. 27, 1989 >> Anne Mitchell, 18, who was selected as Berks Dairy Princess last May, was named Pennsylvania State Dairy Princess during a pageant held over the weekend at the Harrisburg Marriot.

Jason Warnich a sixth-grade student in Hamburg Elementary School, recently competed in the Pennsylvania State BMX Championship in McConnelsburg, Fulton County, and emerged the eventual champion for 12 year-olds by defeating ten other riders in the final event.
