<![CDATA[Dorothy Padfield, daughter of Zern's Farmer's Market founder, celebrates her 100th birthday]]> Friends and family gathered at Manatawny Manor, 30 Old Schuylkill Rd., Pottstown, on June 19 to celebrate Mrs. Dorothy Padfield's 100th birthday.

Dorothy was born in 1915 in Gilbertsville the sixth of ten children, to William and Addie Zern. Her father, William, opened the iconic Zern's Farmer's Market in 1922.

Protective actions should be taken immediately.

This dangerous storm was located near Honey Brook and moving northeast at 20 mph.

<![CDATA[Boyertown business owner recognized for volunteer effort]]> The co-chairwoman of Boyertown's Oktoberfest committee has been recognized by the Pennsylvania Downtown Center as its volunteer of the year. Former Building a Better Boyertown board member Shannon Anthony was presented with her award at the annual Townie Awards Gala June 17.

In 2013, Anthony logged an average of 40 hours volunteering per week from January to October.

Boyertown's eighth annual Relay for Life kicked off at the Boyertown Community Park on Saturday, June 27.

"The rain definitely made it challenging, but it also showed the determination and support that the Boyertown community has for this cause," said event coordinator Kristin Quigley.

<![CDATA[Kutztown Folk Festival kicks off with wine and history]]> The first day of the 66th annual Kutztown Folk Festival got off to a slow start after steady rains dampened attendance Saturday, June 29.

Beth Gruppo, Pinnacle Ridge Winery in Kutztown, said they were still busy despite the rain. Pinnacle Ridge is one of five wineries in a walking trail throughout the Folk Festival as one of three new attractions this year.

Everyone said someone should do something and meetings were held; and in many cases the issue faded away. In Kutztown, Kathy Metrick, KASD Superintendent, and many others stepped up and took action.

A full week of celebrations, including four parades, enveloped the borough in a way that is almost unimaginable today. In an era before the Internet, television, radio, and universal car ownership, there was very little competition for the attention of Kutztown's citizens, making the celebration the top attraction for the East Penn Valley in 1915.

<![CDATA[Kutztown area School District Student Art Show celebrates Kutztown Bicentennial]]> Greenwich and Kutztown Elementary students celebrated Kutztown's Bicentennial Day with daylong activities paying homage to their Pennsylvania Heritage.

They designed their own birth frakturs, scherneschnitte. They selected and produced a traditional quilt pattern block.

An exhibition of the student's Frakturs, Scherenschnitte and Quilt Blocks produced during the Bicentennial Day Celebration is on display at the Historical Society as one of the special exhibitions and will be available for public viewing on July 21.

<![CDATA[Touch a Train at WK&S Railroad in Kempton]]> The WK&S Railroad in Kempton offered the community a unique opportunity to view equipment that is seldom available to the public at their Touch a Train event on June 21.

According to the General Manager of the railroad, Norwood "Woody" Lawfer of Stony Run, it was a chance for people interested in different pieces of equipment, like the large crane and the steam engine, to see them "up close and personal.
