Meiser is currently working on his twenty-second volume of The Passing Scene series, which highlights photographs with a plethora of coinciding information to document the past.

<![CDATA[Boyertown Museum showcases history of the Pennsylvania Turnpike-A 'Tunnel Highway']]> When the Pennsylvania Turnpike opened in 1940, the Turnpike Commission promoted their new road as the "tunnel highway." This is due to no less than seven tunnels making up part of the Turnpike through the mountainous terrain it crossed between the Carlisle and Irwin interchanges. Originally, there were nine tunnels proposed by planners.

The Daniel Boone School Board is considering adding audio recording to its video monitoring of district school buses.

The school board's policy committee will introduce a first draft of a policy that would establish audio recording on school buses at the Sept. 8 committee-of-the-whole meeting.

<![CDATA[2 injured after plane crash in Amity (video)]]>

Two people were injured Wednesday, Aug. 27 afternoon after a small airplane crashed and caught fire, police said.

Emergency crews responded to the scene at 101 Amity Park Road, where a small, privately-owned grass runway known as Bert's Field is located.

Firefighters tackled a blaze consuming the plane, which was pointed down a short incline off the south side of the runway.

The toy section of Boscov's East, Reading, was bustling in activities and games for children as part of the fourth library fundraiser through the company. An array of rainbow colored balloons were transformed into various animal creatures including octopuses, spiders by Ladybug the Clown.

<![CDATA[Kutztown Dolphins complete successful swim season]]> The Kutztown Dolphins swim team had numerous team members qualify to compete at the Berks County Swimming Championships meet and the Berks County Silver Championship meet. Dolphin swimmers turned in some great individual and relay performances at each of these meets.

The Berks County Championships meet was held at the Green Valley Country Club August 1-3.

Money from the fundraiser benefits the Krist Staudt Memorial Scholarship Fund which awards scholarships to Berks County high school seniors who have overcome a medical challenge and are continuing their education at a technical school, business school, junior college, or four year college.

Their story inspired a nomination for the Richard L. Swanson Award, a national fitness award given through the SilverSneakers program. The couple, now in the Top 10, await the final result of the vote.

<![CDATA[Bloody calling card lands Boyertown man in prison for New Hanover burglaries]]>

A Boyertown man who left a bloody calling card that linked him to burglaries at a New Hanover residence is headed to state prison.

Mark Thomas Quinter, 45, whose last known address was in the 100 block of Walnut Street, was sentenced in Montgomery County Court to three to six years in a state correctional facility after he pleaded guilty to felony charges of burglary in connection with two break-ins that occurred at a Hill Road residence in New Hanover between August and September 2011.

<![CDATA[Bat rehabilitator talks to Longswamp Boy Scout Pack 575]]> The boy scouts of Longswamp Pack 575, Den 2, from Mertztown, received an education in bats on a recent Friday night.

Stephanie Stronsick was the educator. Stephanie works as a Naturalist at the Wildlands Conservancy in Emmaus and volunteers as Aark's bat specialist. She is the only animal rehabilitater in PA that specializes in bats.

<![CDATA[Studio B camp brings artists and students together for 'Happ,' #68 Bear Fever bear]]> Resilience, appreciation of diversity and developing tools to challenge bullying was the theme for Studio B's "Happy to Be Me 3.0" summer art camp.

The week long camp, which ran Aug 18 to 22, enlisted students 7 to 17 years of age to work with artists Jean Esther and Angel Perez as well as Boyertown Area School District art teacher Nancy Yurkovich.
