Eddinger came home with a third-place bronze medal in the Class AAA 800-meter run withd a time of 1:51.19 in the finals.

Eddinger had run the top time in the trials of the 800 Friday with a 1:54.

<![CDATA[Hamburg Game Association holds 58th Children's Fishing Rodeo]]> Area children enjoyed the sport of fishing at the Hamburg Game Association's Children's Fishing Rodeo, a long-time annual event held this year on Saturday and Sunday, May 16 and 17. Over both days, 283 youngsters -- accompanied by parents and grandparents -- caught 537 trout, pulled from the association's beautiful pond.

This year's theme is "Happy Birthday Shoemakersville" in honor of the town turning 250 years old.

<![CDATA[Kutztown High School Class of 2017 hosts first Running of the Cougars 5K Race and Fun Walk]]> On Saturday, May 16, the Kutztown Area High School Class of 2017 hosted the first annual "Running of the Cougars" 5K Race and Fun Walk.

Runners ran a course that circled the property of the school district that included a combination of challenges including hills, grass, gravel, and asphalt sections.

<![CDATA[Hamburg Art Alliance hosts Arts Fest in Downtown Hamburg]]> Locals braved an iffy forecast and were awarded with a beautiful, sunny day at the 2015 Hamburg Arts and Crafts Fest held in downtown Hamburg on Saturday, May 16. Attendance to the fest was free, as was parking. Participants in the accompanying "Rolling Art" Car and Motorcycle Show paid an entry fee, but had the chance to win door prizes as well as show prizes.

<![CDATA[Hamburg Post Office recognizes one of its own]]> The Hamburg Post Office recently took some time to recognize one of their own for his 35 years of service. Stanley R. Henne Jr., was honored during a brief presentation with the flag that had been flying at the post office.

"The National Association of Letter Carriers bestows this honor upon you where they fly a flag at the office and then they take it down and they present it to you," said Julie Weiser, Postmaster at the Hamburg Post Office.

<![CDATA[Schuylkill Valley School Directors hear about 'Being a Writer' program, recognize students]]> The Board of School Directors at the Schuylkill Valley School District held their regular meeting on Monday, May 18.

Kindergarten teachers, Mary Ellen Kummerer and Melney Reich, spoke about the "Being a Writer" curriculum used in kindergarten classes. During a powerpoint presentation, attendees learned that the curriculum teaches the craft of writing and "builds a writing community.

Comcast, joined by John Hanger, Secretary of Planning and Policy for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and other government officials, recognized the students at a special event at the State Museum of Pennsylvania.

<![CDATA[Little Sprouts Daycare LLC expands with Bernville location]]> Jessica Schaeffer always dreamed of opening her own daycare center after having her own in-home daycare. In April of 2014, she opened Little Sprouts Daycare LLC in an old doctor's office on Main Street in Strausstown (this center will remain open until May of next year). After only a year, Schaeffer saw it was time to expand the center to a larger location which happened to be in Bernville.

Taps and a Salute to the Dead was given as well as solemn prayers in remembrance to those fallen and serving.

<![CDATA[Felicia Fisher's Slice of Life: Ice cream makerless strawberry ice cream]]> I've concluded that the lack of decent customer service in today's world is, in effect, a lack of integrity. Entry level employees simply do not care if they're doing their job well and this became apparent to me on several occasions this week including snide comments by a cashier coupled with the failure of a customer service representative to follow up with a telephone call as promised leaving me to wonder if my mixer parts will ever be delivered.
