Susan Gallagher, chief naturalist, and Franklin Klock II, naturalist, from the Carbon County Environmental Education Center, brought Rennie the bald eagle and Miss Charles, or also known as "Goldie," the golden eagle for an educational presentation.

Recently, freshman Congressman Ryan Costello (PA-06) spent the afternoon at the Douglass Township farm to tout the CIDER Act, bipartisan legislation that was reintroduced in the 114th Congress to loosen regulations and lessen the tax burden on selling hard cider.

<![CDATA[Mertztown man threatens woman with gun in domestic incident]]> On Aug. 26 at 3:41 a.m., State Police from the Reading station were called to a domestic disturbance on Sally Ann Furnace Road in Rockland Township.

Through a series of interviews, police learned that William James Spannuth, 56, of Mertztown, awoke at 3 a.m. with pain caused by a pre-existing medical condition.

<![CDATA[20-year-old female robbed at gunpoint in Lyons]]> The Pennsylvania State Police of Reading responded to a robbery at gunpoint that occurred on Aug. 28 in the Lyons Borough.

At 4:50 a.m., the 20-year-old female victim was walking to work on Ash Street, just north of State Street. The suspect, a male wearing all black and a black ski mask, pulled out a handgun and demanded the victim's money.

The races will begin and end on the North Campus athletic practice fields adjacent to Luckenbill Road. Official race timing will be conducted by Pretzel City Sports.

Cindy Gruelle Goho, of Mohrsville, is the great-niece of Johnny Gruelle, the creator of the original Raggedy Ann doll. Goho and her husband, Rick, who have an extensive collection of Raggedy Ann dolls, memorabilia and vintage toys from the 1930s through 1975, will mark the anniversary of the first patent issued for Raggedy Ann on Sept.

<![CDATA[Fun Friday: Spend an afternoon on the wild side at Elmwood Park Zoo]]> The Elmwood Park Zoo in Norristown offers the ideal afternoon escape for families and animal lovers. Our family took our first visit to this zoo the last Friday before school started and time flew as we explored exhibits featuring diverse mammals, birds, reptiles and more. The property, which extends over 16 acres, dates back to the 1920s and is run as a non-profit by the Norristown Zoological Society.

The plaque was on his breakfast table at 3rd Street Café on Aug. 25. The hole in one was on Aug. 14, 2014 at hole #6 at Perry Golf Club. Garland had been golfing 50 years.

Her project consisted of organizing and scrapbooking newspaper articles and archiving Senator's letters addressing the advocacy of the deaf and hard of hearing in Berks County dating back since 1967.

<![CDATA[Three Chick-fil-A locations donate $2,500 to Food Bank's Weekender Backpack Program]]> After a daylong fundraiser this summer, three Chick-fil-A locations in Berks County have donated $2,500 to the Greater Berks Food Bank's Weekender Backpack Program.

On Aug. 11, Chick-fil-A Exeter, Chick-fil-A Broadcasting Square and Chick-fil-A Berkshire Mall donated a portion of total sales to the backpack program, which sends healthy food home with 1,500 students in Berks and Schuylkill counties on Fridays during the school year.

<![CDATA[54-Acre Arnold Farm now protected, Sen. Schwank announces]]> A 54-acre tract in Tulpehocken Township, Berks County, is now under the commonwealth's farmland preservation shield, state Senator Judy Schwank said on Aug. 13.

Lawrence and Donna Arnold received nearly $135,000 in conservation easements in exchange for including their farm in the long-running program.

<![CDATA[Daniel Boone re-hires 2.5 elementary teachers]]> The Daniel Boone School Board approved 5-3 on Aug. 24 to hire 2.5 elementary teachers to lower class sizes.

Acting Superintendent Robert Hurley said the current first and third grade enrollment at Monocacy Elementary Center (MEC) exceeds the district's class size policy.

Board members Andrew Basile, Carol Beitz, and Tamara Twardowski opposed the motion.
