<![CDATA[2 Boyertown students to be disciplined over racist remarks at track meet]]> BOYERTOWN >> Two students at Boyertown Junior High West will receive the maximum punishment allowed as the result of the school district's investigation of racial comments being made during a track meet with Pottstown Middle School.

Schools Superintendent Richard Faidley told The Mercury that he met with 30 to 60 students and 10 to 15 adults who were at the May 5 meet as part of his investigation.

<![CDATA[Rededication of Carl A. Spaatz Pavilion]]> On Saturday, May 30, the Boyertown Alumni Band will be playing at the Boyertown Community Park at 7 p.m. The concert is an annual event during Fun Days, but this year, it will feature something special.

The band pavilion in the park was dedicated to General Carl A. Spaatz in 1980, and this year there will be a rededication of the pavilion, and an unveiling of the new Carl A.

Tom Wolf's chief of staff, Katie McGinty, said the governor is willing to compromise over his proposal to subject nursing homes, child care, flags, and many other goods and services to the state sales and use tax.

"Numbers are numbers. If there's another way to pay the bill, and to work with the sales tax, so that you're not expanding that base, …(the) governor's all ears," McGinty said during a York Daily Record/Sunday News editorial board session on Thursday.

There were concerns from the board regarding the wording of the resolution, which authorizes the sale to the highest bidder but does not set a minimum bid.

"I'm a little bit reluctant to authorize a sale where we don't have a purchase price or a better idea of what the purchase price is going to be," said Board Vice President Randy Burch.

<![CDATA[Teams 'cruise for a cure' at Relay for Life of Central Berks]]> Lynne Ruffner, the Event Head for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Central Berks, held at the Schuylkill Valley School District stadium, opened the event on Friday, May 15 on an emotional note by thanking "team captains and participants for creating a world with more birthdays."

Ruffner confirmed that 30 teams were involved in the Relay for Life and that the Relay was celebrating its 30 anniversary this year.

<![CDATA[Father and son rescued from banks of Schuylkill in Douglass (Berks) Township]]> A father and son who went kayaking in the Schuylkill River Sunday night, May 17, were rescued by firemen after grappling with a strong current.

Amity Fire Chief Mike Zomolsky explained that the men were stranded along the river bank and because of a swift current they couldn't make it back upstream.

So when she went shopping for a college to attend next fall, she wanted a college where running was important. In the end, that college was Edinboro University. She recently signed her letter-of-intent to run cross country and track for the Fighting Scots.
