This is the eighth consecutive year student-athletes from Hamburg Area High School conducted an assembly for elementary students in the District.

<![CDATA[Lead-contaminated Hamburg site discussed at recent DEP meeting]]> The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) held a public meeting on Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. to discuss a proposal for excavation and restoration of a Hamburg site containing lead-contaminated soils and battery casings.

Lisa Kasianowitz, the department's Community Relations Coordinator, opened the meeting and introduced Asuquo Effiong, Project Manager, to speak first on the history of the site.

<![CDATA[Hamburg resident pushes for bill to increase nail technician hours]]> "This is what I do every day. This is my passion," said Kim McCloud, Hamburg native and professional nail technician. "This is my calling. This is what I want to do."

McCloud is working to open a School of Nail Technology here in Pennsylvania. In order to do that and accomplish her goal, she has been working with her state legislator Representative Mike Tobash as well as Wayne Crawford, Majority Executive Director of the Professional Licensure Committee.

<![CDATA[Hamburg Rotary learns about the life of Jacob Balthaser]]> Hamburg Rotarian Fred Sheeler gave a presentation at the Oct. 23 Rotary meeting on the life of Jacob Balthaser. Jacob was most well known in Hamburg as the owner of Balthaser's Store at Third and State Sts. However he was also quite active politically having served on Hamburg Borough Council from the 1920s to the late 1950s, 12 years as Burgess (the former term for mayor), and serving three terms 1937-1943 in the PA State House representing the then 3rd district.

<![CDATA[Robeson Township concerned about driving safety due to potholes on Outlook Road]]> Robeson Township Board of Supervisors expressed safety concerns for those driving on pothole damaged Outlook Road and wish to address drainage issues to make sure the roads are fixed correctly beyond a cosmetic fix.

Former board member Tom White of Outlook Road spoke at the Oct. 23 Board of Supervisors meeting of the great need for repairs to the road and questioned the time it would take before repairs would begin.

Driving to work on my first day at Kutztown University, stuck behind a trash truck for several miles of two-lane no-passing zone on US 222 until the Kutztown bypass, I wondered, through the inescapable stench, what I had gotten myself into. Had I not found an alternative route that avoided US 222 on my commute, I probably would have moved to avoid it.
