But their dreams of a league championship faded away when they lost their next two games to be eliminated from the tournament.

<![CDATA[Boyertown Lady Ballers win the Stellar Basketball Tournament]]> The Boyertown Lady Ballers, a high School varsity summer basketball team, played in the annual Stellar Basketball Tournament held at Cedar Beach Park in Allentown.

Starting with a victory on July 11, the girls continued play on July 12 with a win against Salisbury first, then suffering a loss in their second game to Southern Lehigh, placing them in the losers bracket the next day.

<![CDATA[Lee Mecherly retires from coaching after 37 years with the Bear-Cubs]]> For 37 years, Lee Mecherly coached the Boyertown Bear Cubs Junior Legion team. He won numerous league titles, regional and state titles. Mecherly stepped down as the coach in November of 2013, but still spends numerous hours working on the field which bears his name, making sure that it's one of the best fields, if not the best field, in Berks County.

<![CDATA[Boyertown Legion Bears fall short of Berks League title]]> It was an interesting Berks County playoff tournament. It featured weather delays and postponements, exciting contests (including an upset), and, of course, some controversy. In the end, however, the Boyertown Bears came up just short in their bid for yet another Berks County Championship.

The playoffs began on a high note for the Bears.

<![CDATA[Tim Buckwalter back in the winner's circle at Grandview Speedway]]> Tim Buckwalter, an ARDC midget racing standout has won several midget features at Grandview Speedway, but he had never won a 30-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series 358 Modified feature until Saturday night in the activities sponsored by Hatfield Quality Meats and televised by RCN-TV 4. Point leader Randy Stoudt topped the field in the 25-lap BRC Late Model feature race while Jared Umbenhauer continued his record setting pace winning the 25-lap Sportsman feature race for his ninth win of the season.

Lincoln Speedway (Outlaws) Daryn Pittman led all 35 laps, but it was Brian Montieth who was the show July 17 at the Lincoln Speedway. Pittman started on the pole and bested Outlaw "King" Steve Kinser into turn one as the field trailed with Brian Montieth way back in 15th lap after lap Montieth picked off the Outlaws before passing Joey Saldana for second on lap 23, and then set his sites on Pittman.

<![CDATA[Boyertown American Legion Bears earn a clutch victory over Norchester]]> With each passing year, the beauty and fascination of the standard, double-elimination playoff format used at most levels in American Legion baseball tournaments continues to grow on me. The manner in which the various "starting brackets" are interconnected to form the resulting winner's bracket and loser's bracket, and indeed, the way that these two brackets interact as the tournament progresses, is a fascinating intellectual exercise to me.

<![CDATA[Boyertown Bear-Cubs keep winning with a new head coach]]> Some things never change when it comes to junior legion baseball in Boyertown. Lee Mecherly retired as the Bear-Cubs coach. He was replaced by Neil Fox. He is helped by his assistants - Ryan Fox (Neil's brother), Marty Bauer and Roger Eidle.

New coaches, same result. The Bear Cubs are enjoying a very good season.
