This is the Dolphins' first winning season since 2007.

The Dolphins defeated the Topton Torpedoes, 249 to 220, on July 14, to bring their record to 4-0 in league competition.

<![CDATA[Hodnett and Laubach win Thunder on the Hill]]> The NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series continued its' 25th anniversary season on July 29 with the popular 410 Sprints and the Race of Champions Modifieds in a spectacular double-header. Greg Hodnett earned a $5,000 payday for winning the 35 lap 410 Sprint feature event, his fourth win in a row at Grandview Speedway.

<![CDATA[Boyertown Grizzlies qualify for state Jr. Legion baseball tournament]]> With a 5-0 victory over Hamburg at Radnor High School on July 30, the Boyertown Grizzlies Jr. Legion baseball team won the Wayne Regional Tournament and qualified for the double-elimination state tournament.

The Grizzlies did it the hard way. After losing to North Parkland in the opening round, the Grizzlies fought back through the losers bracket, winning the next five games to win the tournament.

<![CDATA[Daniel Boone Jr. Legion Orioles take second in state regional tournament]]> The Daniel Boone Jr. Legion Orioles made it all the way to the championship game of the state regional tournament in Pottstown. With a 7-2 loss to Nether Providence (a team the Orioles lost to earlier in the tournament), Boone was eliminated from the tournament, winning three games and losing two.

<![CDATA[Twin Valley swimmers break records]]> The Twin Valley girls U14 swim relay broke the Brandywine Swim League Medley relay record on July 19 and they broke the Freestyle relay record on July 26, both records were from 1994. The girls also broke the Twin Valley swim team relay record in both the Freestyle relay(1998) by 8 seconds and the Medley relay (2007) by 17 seconds.

<![CDATA[Boyertown Bear Paws eliminated from state regional tournament]]> The Boyertown Bear-Paws completed a successful season last week when they were eliminated from the state regional tournament. The Bear-Paws were 3-2 in the tournament and finished the season with an overall record of 30-6.

The Bear Paws won the first game of the tournament on July 22, 6-0 over Lehigh.

Those who competed were Annika Gally (Kutztown), Julianna Glassner (Boyertown), Madelyn Green (Boyertown), Carlie Owens (Daniel Boone), Andrew Armbruster (Brandywine Heights), Ivan Escott (Boyertown), Ridge Hager (Quakertown), Justin Morris (Boyertown), Jacob Santos (Daniel Boone) and Griffin Schlegel (Twin Valley).

<![CDATA[PA Strikers 10U wins 2014 PONY National Championship]]> Congratulation to the 10U PA Striker Fastpitch Softball team who, just a few weeks after winning the 2014 10U PA PONY State Championship in Philadelphia, went undefeated (8-0) in Sterling, VA the week of July 18-23 to win the 2014 PONY 10U National tournament!

The Strikers relied on team effort and talented balance of strong defense, incredible pitching and big bats to beat the Vienna Stars (VA), Xtreme Fastpitch (PA), NJ Pride (NJ), Orange Crush (DE), VA Crushers (VA), Ashburn Shooting Stars (VA) and the Banshees (PA) - who they also played in the championship game and won by a score of 3-0.

<![CDATA[Phillies win the 12U Kutztown youth baseball championship]]> The Kutztown KYAA 12U baseball program has completed its spring-summer season with a 1-2-3 Kutztown sweep in the overall standings. The Kutztown program fielded three very solid teams with the Phillies, Dodgers and Tigers, finishing in that order against rival teams from Fleetwood, Muhlenberg, Brandywine and Oley Valley, totaling 10 teams representing the league.

<![CDATA[Boyertown boy, Easton Albert, named a Baseball Youth Magazine All-American]]> Eight-year-old Easton Albert, who will be entering the third grade at Earl Elementary School in the Boyertown Area School District, was recently nominated, then named, to a Baseball Youth Magazine All-American 9U.

Easton plays travel baseball on the Baseball U 10U team based in Scranton. He received the honor after a very successful week at the Cooperstown, New York, Youth Baseball Tournament.

<![CDATA[Boyertown Lady Ballers win the Stellar Basketball Tournament]]> The Boyertown Lady Ballers, a high School varsity summer basketball team, played in the annual Stellar Basketball Tournament held at Cedar Beach Park in Allentown.

Starting with a victory on July 11, the girls continued play on July 12 with a win against Salisbury first, then suffering a loss in their second game to Southern Lehigh, placing them in the losers bracket the next day.

<![CDATA[Lee Mecherly retires from coaching after 37 years with the Bear-Cubs]]> For 37 years, Lee Mecherly coached the Boyertown Bear Cubs Junior Legion team. He won numerous league titles, regional and state titles. Mecherly stepped down as the coach in November of 2013, but still spends numerous hours working on the field which bears his name, making sure that it's one of the best fields, if not the best field, in Berks County.
