A group of a dozen women, residents of The Heritage of Greens Hills, an active, 55+ independent living community located in Shillington, sewed 1,014 quilts for patients at St. Joseph Medical Center in Reading in 2013. The quilts, which were given to infants, sick children and adult patients, were delivered to the medical center each month, with the last delivery made in mid-December.
The women, members of The Heritage of Green Hills’ Quilters, meet every Monday afternoon to sew, knit and crochet. Once the quilts are delivered to the hospital, the patients that receive them are able to take the welcomed gifts home with them. The Quilters also crochet infant hats.
According to Susan Kappenstein, director of volunteer services for St. Joseph Medical Center, ‘These quilts have blessed 1,000 patients here at St. Joseph. We are so gratified for the warmth and healing that was sewn into each one.’
