Hamburg Seventh-day Adventist Church presented a check to Jonathan Duffy, President of Adventist Development and Relief International (ADRA), on March 15. The check was for relief aid for the destruction that was a result of the earthquake that occurred in the Philippines in November 2013.
A total of $25,581.97 was presented to ADRA.
“Today, 4.1 million people remain displaced in the aftermath of the storm, particularly in isolated areas and disadvantaged communities,” said Alex DuBee, Pastor of Seventh-day Adventist Church. “On one island alone, 95 percent of the houses were destroyed by the storm. Many victims in the fishing industry lost their source of income. The devastation of resources made it extremely difficult for families to eat.”
According to Pastor DuBee, ADRA moved to provide 10,000 tarpaulins and 5,000 shelter kits, began to repair 2,000 boats and provide financial assistance for restoration to help fisherman get back to work, provide food packs that consisted of rice, beans, sugar, canned fish, noodles and oil to 3,000 families and set up a water purification unit in Mambusao, Capiz, which is providing clean, drinking water to about 1,000 families.
Pastor DuBee explained the reason the Church decided to raise money for the cause was their concern for the needs of humanity around the world. The congregation was encouraged to hang their donations on the Church Christmas Tree, during their annual Christmas program.
“Everyone gives according to their ability,” said the Pastor. “Some save towards this gift offering all year.”
Raising money for the cause is important to the church community. They have been raising money for a variety of different causes for the past 18 years.
“Jesus said, ‘As we’ve done unto the least of these, we have done it unto Him’,” said DuBee.
The Hamburg Seventh-day Adventist Church and the ADRA have been raising money for causes such as this since 1956. From the last 18 years, the groups have raised around $242, 209.79.
According to Pastor DuBee, the ADRA continues to work to improve the quality of life for people around and for different world assistance projects around the world.
