Salem United Methodist Church Shoemakersville
Welcome to the corner of Sixth and Main Streets in Shoemakersville for our morning worship at 9 a.m. The scripture for the morning is Matthew 16:13-20, which will be read by Helen James, and Beth Moore will have the Children’s Message. Sunday School will follow with classes for all.
Our annual Charge Conference will be held on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 12 noon. There will be a covered-dish brunch between worship service and the Conference. S/PPRC will meet prior to the Church Conference. All members are requested to attend this once-a-year meeting.
Pastor Bill and Connie will lead a study of the movie “The Son of God.” Developed by Rick Warren, this is a six week series of viewing the movie and discussing it. Please let the pastor know if you would like to join this group.
The youth will be travelling to Heisler’s for miniature golf on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 7. They are also planning to have a stand at King Frost.
Rally Day, Sept. 14, will feature many types of talent. There will be music, skits, dance and other talents. This will immediately follow worship in the sanctuary. There will be refreshments in Fellowship Hall after the show.
The Youth Mission Team is holding an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 5 at 4:30 p.m. At 6 p.m. there will be a presentation which will provide a glimpse of the activities and programs that the team enjoyed during their work week.
Tastefully Simple will host a fund-raiser for the Youth Mission Team on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 19, at 1 p.m. The team will receive 40% of the sales. Please invite everybody who cooks to this fun meeting.
Our Anniversary Sunday is Sunday, Oct. 26. The Reverend Larry Richard has agreed to return to be our guest speaker for the morning. There will be a letter to the congregation with further information.

Join us Aug. 24 at 9 a.m. for Morning Worship. We will be worshipping the Lord by singing His praises by having a Hymn Sing. You may choose your favorite Hymn during this service. Friedens Church, Shartlesville
A blood drive is scheduled for Saturday Sept. 6 at Friedens Church in Shartlesville from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The drive is in Honor of Elijah Hoss, a 6th grade student at Hamburg Middle School, and a resident of Upper Bern Twp. who is diagnosed with Leukemia.
Donors need to be at least 17 years old and weigh minimum of 110 pounds. Call Marie Strause at 610-488-5072 to register.
Evangelical Lutheran Friedens Church
Special vocal music was provided by Mark Preletz. The flowers were placed in honor of the birthdays of Don and Luanne by the Reeses. The bulletins were sponsored in memory of the birthday of Ronald Schittler by daughter, Lisa and Mark Preletz and the inserts were in honor or the birthday of Marsha Karasack by Leandra Karasack and Colton and Hunter Hoffman. Green Thumb Work Day is scheduled for Aug. 23. Choir rehearsal will resume on Aug. 28. On Sept. 7 the regular worship service will resume.
St. Thomas Church
The membership enjoyed the annual combined worship service and picnic. The altar flowers were presented in loving memory of Grace K. Scheffer by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Special music was provided by Tyler Stricker, saxophonist and Alexis Klopp, pianist. Drew Folk was Acolyte. The Guild Meeting will be held on Aug. 26 at 7 p.m. at Ed and Linda Swope’s Wagon and Hobby shop. Harvest Home will be observed on Sept. 7. The donations of fruit, vegetables and canned goods will be given to Teen Challenge and S.O.F.A. The Youth Rock Family Picnic will be held immediately after the 10:30 a.m. worship service on Sept. 7 at Penn Township Park.
First Reformed Church of the United Church of Christ
With summer winding down, First Reformed Church of the United Church of Christ, at the corner of Third and Pine Streets in Hamburg, the Reverend Susan Ohl, interim pastor, will soon return to its fall worship schedule. The church will hold its Rally Day program on Sunday, Sept. 14, and with that the worship time will change from 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.
All parents, who would like their children, ages 12 year or older, to be enrolled in Confirmation class, are urged to attend a brief meeting to be held on Sunday, Aug. 24 following the 9 a.m. Worship service.
Attention golfers: Sign up now to participate in the First Church Golf Tournament to be held on Sunday, Sept. 7 at Green Acres Golf Course. The entry fee is very reasonable and includes lunch, snacks and beverages. Prizes will be awarded. Proceeds benefit the church’s Youth programs. First Church will operate a stand at the Hamburg-er Day Festival on Aug. 30. The stand will be located in front of the church. The menu this year will feature Cajun-style burgers with all the fixings as well as more plain ones for those with more conservative tastes. A fixture at Hamburg-er Day since the festival began, this stand has raised thousands of dollars toward the church mission, winning several awards and serving lots of customers along the way.

Youth Group Laurel Event: Craft Night on Sunday, Sept. 7. Meet at the Laurel Center by 6:30 p.m. (Notice the earlier meet time so we can set up for the activity.) We will be assisting the residents in painting wooden puzzles provided by Gifts of Cheer. The residents will make one puzzle to keep and another for Gifts of Cheer to give to someone with a life threatening disease. Be sure to sign up on the bulletin board or RSVP to Lydia so we can plan accordingly!
