Perry Elementary Center Dedicated to Esther H. Ludwig should be completed by late October or early November, Superintendent Steven Keifer told school directors on Sept. 22.

“Students and teachers are enjoying the new school,” Keifer said.

Some of the areas still being worked on include: installation of a wooden floor in the gymnasium, flooring on the stage in the auditorium, roofing work and landscaping, according to Keifer.

The library was recently completed and plans include inviting the public to the school for a grand opening on Nov. 13.

Classes for elementary students started a week later then those for middle and high school students to allow more work to be completed in order for the district to receive an occupancy permit.

In other news, school directors approved a co-op agreement with Tulpehocken for bowling for the 2014-15 and 2015-16 school years.

Tulpehocken does not have a bowling program and currently has one student committed to join the Hawks’ squad, according to Hamburg Area athletic director Aaron Menapace.

“I’ve talked to team members, parents and coaches and have received positive feedback,” Menapace said. “It would not change our classification. I’m in favor that we do this.”

In other news, Business Manager Michele Zimmerman announced that the district is beginning the process of reviewing and revising board policies.

“It’s a long process which starts with the 000-Series and goes through the 800-Series,” Zimmerman said. “Not all policies are revised, some will stay the same.”

The Pennsylvania School Board Association reviews the policies and may offer suggestions prior to review by school administrators and school directors.

In other news, Keifer noted that this year’s incoming kindergarten class has 130 students which is 20 students less than the next lowest class.

The board met in executive session prior to the meeting to discuss contract negotiations. No details were available.

The next meeting of school directors is Monday, Oct. 13 at 6:30 p.m. in the James A. Gilmartin Community Room.
