Dr. Richard J. Mextorf has been selected as the new Superintendent of Schools for the Hamburg Area School District, effective July 1, 2015. The HASD Board of Directors mad the appointment official at the board meeting on Monday, April 27. Dr. Mextorf succeeds Mr. Steven Keifer, who is officially retiring from HASD.

Mr. Brooke Adams, President of the HASD Board of Directors, stated, “We are pleased to have secured Dr. Richard Mextorf as our new Superintendent. Dr. Mextorf is an exemplary educational leader who has served as an advocate for students and has forged meaningful relationships with all educational constituents he has worked with over the years. The HASD Board of Directors has full confidence that Dr. Mextorf will successfully lead the HASD as Superintendent of Schools in order to meet the needs of our students and staff, and to serve our community.”

Dr. Mextorf is currently serving as Superintendent of Schools at Grove City Area School District. Previously, he served as Superintendent of Schools at State College Area School District and Loyalsock Township School District. Dr. Mextorf has extensive education experience as a teacher, building principal, and central office administrator. He also has served as an adjunct professor for Wilkes University. Additionally, Dr. Mextorf was the 2009 recipient of the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association Outstanding Superintendent Award, and the 2007 recipient of the John Wanamaker Humanitarian Medal.

Hamburg Area School District is located in northern Berks County. The District covers 103 square miles and is the largest, geographically, of the county’s 18 public school districts. The District encompasses three boroughs (Hamburg, Strausstown, and Shoemakersville) and five townships (Perry, Windsor, Tilden, Upper Bern and Upper Tulpehocken). The District has a student population of 2,400 who are educated in four school buildings; two elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. Staff members consist of 180 professional staff, 84 full-time support staff, 29 part-time support staff and 16 administrative staff. The 2014-2015 general operating budget is $38,099,328.
