Cross Country: Four area runners are honored

Four area high school students received honors from the Berks County Cross Country Coaches Association at the organizationís annual awards banquet on Nov. 12 in Reading.

Casey Santos and Carl Fortna of the Fleetwood Area High School boys cross country team, and Madeline Short and Jillian Uhlenbrock of the Kutztown Area High School girls cross country team were named to the 2013 Berks County Cross Country Division II All-Star Teams.

The all-star teams are determined by a runnerís finish at the Berks County Cross Country Championships. This yearís county meet was held October 16 at Kutztown University.

Santos, a senior, finished the county race 29th in a time of 18:05. It was his best time in his four seasons running on the 3.1-mile course, and the third-straight year he earned All-Division honors. Fortna, a sophomore, placed in 32nd in a time of 18:08.The duo helped the Tigers to a seventh place finish out of 16 teams.

Santos and Fortna also represented Fleetwood at the District III Championships on Hershey on October 23. Santos finished 67th in 18:33 and Fortna placed 53rd in 18:21. Fleetwood placed 16th out of 31 teams.

Short, a senior, placed 30th in the Berks County girlsí race in a time of 21:30. She also earned all-division honors in 2012 and 2011. Uhlenbrock, a junior, was 41st in a time of 22:12. The Cougars placed 11th out of 15 teams.

Short and Uhlenbrock went on to represent Kutztown at the District III meet in Hershey, placing 35th (21:09) and 62nd (22:13), respectively.
