Daniel BooneBoys’ BasketballThe Daniel Boone High School boys’ basketball team improved to 2-4 in the Berks League and 9-7 overall after a pair of victories.

On Jan. 17, the Daniel Boone High School boys’ basketball team traveled to Muhlenberg for a Berks League contest. The game went down to the wire but a fourth quarter comeback helped the Blazers get a 63-61 win.

With Boone holding a 29-27 halftime lead, the Muhls outscored the Blazers in the third quarter, 25-15, to take a eight point lead. But Boone came back in the fourth quarter, outscoring its hosts, 19-9.

Kenny Worthington had a big night, scoring 29 points in the game. Keyon McCutchen netted 12 points and Daniel Downs scored eight. Steven Sievers added seven points.

On Jan. 18, the Blazers remained on the road, this time to take on non-league opponent Wyomissing. The Blazers won the game, 60-48.

Daniel Boone held a slim 30-27 halftime lead, then outscored the Spartans in the third quarter, 18-12, and the fourth, 12-9.

Worthington was the high scorer once again for the Blazers with 19 points in the game. Sievers chipped in with 14 points and Downs had 10. McCutchen added eight points.

Girls’ BasketballThe Daniel Boone High school girls’ basketball team fell to 0-6 in the Berks League and 4-13 overall after losing to Muhlenberg on Jan. 16, 34-30.

The Muhls held Daniel Boone to just one point in the first quarter, and led at halftime, 17-15. They opened things up in the third quarter, outscoring Daniel Boone, 11-2 in the period. The Lady Blazers fought back in the fourth quarter, but the upset bid fell just short.

Taylor Keys paced the Daniel Boone offense with nine points in the contest. Emily Scott netted eight points and Kaitlyn Keeley scored five.

ExeterBoys’ BasketballThe Exeter Township High School boys’ basketball team fell to 3-3 in the Berks League and 9-5 overall after losing to Governor Mifflin, 54-48.

The Eagles held an 11-7 lead after one quarter, but the Mustangs came back in the second quarter, outscoring Exeter, 21-12.

Drew Churchill led the Exeter offense with 11 points in the game. Dan Garcia netted nine points while Brett Gilbert, Michal Menet and Taylor Trojanowski.

Girls’ BasketballThe Exeter Township High School girls’ basketball team improved to 3-3 in the Berks League and 12-3 overall after defeating Governor Mifflin on Jan. 16, 57-39.

The Lady Eagles held a 10-9 lead after one quarter, then increased the lead to 12 by halftime, 29-17. Exeter put the game away in the third quarter, outscoring Mifflin, 15-8 in the quarter.

Jennifer Eck led the way for Exeter with 20 points in the game. Katye Johnson scored 12 points while Janai Cintron and Abby Mengel each had eight.

Boys’ SwimmingThe Exeter Township High School boys’ swimming team lost a pair of meets last week and are 3-2 in league play and 3-5 overall.

On Jan. 16, the Eagles were defeated by Owen J. Roberts, 108-75.

Oliver Knabb led the way for Exeter with a pair of individual victories. He was first in the 50 free (23.19) and first in the 100 breast (1:01.21).

Also finishing first individually for Exeter were: Nick Tomczyk, diving, 214.05; Logan Winchester, 100 fly (56.29).

Also winning for the Eagles was the 200 free relay team of Knabb, Zachary Griffith, Winchester and Danny Leskowicz (1:34.28).

On Jan. 17, the Eagles fell to Boyertown, 86-84.

Trent Groff and Winchester led the way for Exeter with two individual wins apiece. Groff was first in the 200 individual medley (2:08.95); and the 100 free (51.24); and Winchester won the 200 free (1:54.31) and the 500 free (5:06.36).

Also winning for Exeter was Leskowicz in the 50 free (23.21).

Exeter’s 200 medley relay team of Groff, Knabb, Winchester and Leskowicz won its race in a time of 1:45.02.

Girls’ SwimmingThe Exeter Township High School girls’ swimming team fell to 1-4 in the league and 2-6 overall after losing a pair of matches last week.

The Lady Eagles began the week with a 103-75 loss to Owen J. Roberts on Jan. 16.

Winning individual events for Exeter were: Sydney Gundersen, 200 free (2:03.99); Elizabeth Chemey, 100 back (59.26 seconds); and Laura Wachowicz, 100 breast (1:18.99).

Also winning for Exeter was the 100 medley relay team of Chemey, Elli Machado, Sydney Gundersen and Lexie Gundersen (1:54.92); the 400 free relay team of Chemey , Lexie Gundersen, Machado and Sydney Gundersen (3:49.91); and the 200 free relay team of Chemey, Lexie Gundersen, Sydney Gundersen and Machado (1:45.72).

Governor MifffinBoys’ Basketball

The Governor Mifflin High School boys’ basketball team improved to 2-4 in the Berks League and 6-11 overall after winning all three of its games last week.

On Jan. 17, the Mustangs played host to Exeter. Mifflin overcame a rough start to defeat the Eagles, 54-48.

The Eagles held an 11-7 lead after one quarter, but the Mustangs came back in the second quarter, outscoring Exeter, 21-12.

Austin Peters and Stevan Rodriguez led the Mifflin offense with 13 points in the game. Jevon Wilet scored eight points while Jacob Klahr scored seven and Jared Peters added six.

In a non-league game, Governor Mifflin played host to Warwick on Jan. 20. The Mustangs jumped out to a 15-7 lead after one quarter, but Warwick came back, outscoring the Mustangs in the second quarter, 13-7,l and the third, 10-2. But Mifflin came roaring back in the fourth quarter, outscoring Warwick, 31-10.

Rodriguez paced the Governor Mifflin offense with 15 points in the contest. Reid Hoff netted 11 points and Trystan Ovid scored 10. Austin Peters added eight.

On Jan. 22, Mifflin traveled to Antietam for another non-league game. Thanks to a strong first half, Mifflin won the game, 65-59.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 16-11 lead after one quarter, then expanded the lead to nine by halftime, 36-27. The Mounts fought back in the second half, but could not complete the comeback.

Rodriguez was high scorer for Mifflin with 15 points. Ovid netted 14 points while Brandon Rodriguez scored eight and Hoff scored seven.

Girls’ BasketballThe Governor Mifflin High School girls’ basketball team split a pair of games last week and are 3-3 in the Berks League and 9-7 overall.

On Jan. 16, Mifflin hit the road to take on Exeter. The Eagles used strong second and third quarters to defeated Mifflin, 57-39.

The Lady Eagles held a 10-9 lead after one quarter, then increased the lead to 12 by halftime, 29-17. Exeter put the game away in the third quarter, outscoring Mifflin, 15-8 in the quarter.

Madison Koehler led the Governor Mifflin offense with 11 points, while Jennifer Martin scored 10 and Melissa Martin netted eight.

On Jan. 18, the Lady Mustangs played host to Hempfield in a non-league contest. Mifflin had little trouble winning this game, 49-31.

The Lady Mustangs jumped out to a 14-9 lead after one quarter, then increased the lead to 12 by halftime, 25-14. They put the game away in the third quarter, outscoring Hempfield, 10-5.

Martin was the top scorer for the Lady Mustangs with 10 points. Martin netted seven points while Carla Santarelli netted seven and Koehler and Kylie Herman each scored six.

WrestlingThe Governor Mifflin High School wrestling team improved to 4-2 in the Berks League and 13-3 overall after winning a pair of matches last week.

On Jan. 16, Mifflin played host to Reading in a Berks League contest. The Mustangs won the game, 46-14.

Winning by pins for Mifflin were: Dylan Harr (152), 2:52; Wilson Fontanez (170), 4:34; and Jan Johnson (195), 1:04; Alex Centeno (106), 1:52; and Robert Karmonick (120), 1:04.

Winning by decisions for Mifflin were: Ben Maack (160); Keith Miller (285), 9-2; Zachary Scheetz (113), 12-0; Allen Arentz (126), 7-3; and Colin Johnson (132), 6-0.

On Jan. 18, the Mustangs also defeated Conrad Weiser in a Berks League match, 58-9.

Winning by pins for Mifflin were: Dillon James (145), 0:43; Harr (152), 1:11; Fontanez (170), 1:36; Miller (285), 1:03; Centeno (106), 3:55; and Robert Foreman (138), 2:28.

Winning by decisions were the Mustangs were: Karmoncik (120), 12-0; Arentz (126), 6-2; and Colin Johnson (132), 6-3.

Boys’ SwimmingThe Governor Mifflin High School boys’ swimming team fell to 4-1 in the league and 4-3 overall after losing a pair of meets last week.

On Jan. 16, the Mustangs lost their first league match of the season when Muhlenberg topped them, 105-81.

Winning individual events for Mifflin were: Sterg Dikos, 200 free; and Owen Hanna, 50 free (22.92).

Also winning for Governor Mifflin was the 200 free relay team of Dikos, Kyle McElroy, Evan Barbon and Hanna (1:30.49).

On Jan. 20, the Mustangs were defeated by Dallastown, 133-53.

Girls’ SwimmingThe Governor Mifflin High School girls’ swimming team split a pair of meets last week and is now 4-0 in the league and 5-2 overall.

On Jan. 16, it was a battle of the unbeatens as the Lady Mustangs took on Muhlenberg. Governor Mifflin came out on top in this battle, 97-89.

Gabriella Johnson led the Lady Mustangs with a pair of individual wins. She was first in the 200 individual medley, and first in the 100 breast (1:09.61).

Dayne Martin won the 100 fly for Mifflin in a time of 1:01.22. Morgan McMahon won the 100 back in a time of 1:05.42.

Also winning for Mifflin was the 200 medley relay team of McMahon, Johnson, Martin and Allie Mueller.

On Jan. 20, the Lady Mustangs lost to Dallastown, 118-65.

Boys’ BowlingThe Governor Mifflin High School boys’ bowling team is 19-5 in the Berks League after defeating Muhlenberg on Jan. 15, 2-1.

Austin Woodworth led the way for Mifflin with a three-game series of 687. Nick Diggan bowled a 674 series and Jon Gottschall a 597.

Girls’ BowlingThe Governor Mifflin High School girls’ bowling team defeated Muhlenberg, 2-1 on Jan. 15. The Lady Mustangs are 15-9 in the Berks League.

The Mustangs were led by Alyssa Wharton who bowled a three-game series of 721. Nicole Stambaugh bowled a 593 series and Emily Carlson a 576.
