This Friday the Philadelphia Eagles return to Hamburg for the Battle of the Birds at 7 p.m. at the Hamburg Area High School gymnasium.
Select players from the Philadelphia Eagles will take on the Hamburg Hawks, a team made up of some of the best local athletes in the Hamburg Area School District including teachers, administrators and coaches. Past players for the visiting Eagles have included DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, LeSean McCoy, Brent Celek, King Dunlap and Todd Herremans. This year’s players are still a secret.
Fans will be able to see a unique sporting event featuring professional football players on the court against familiar faces from the community while supporting a great cause that goes back to the students. The event is presented by the Hamburg Area Education Foundation which is an independent, not-for-profit organization developed to cultivate opportunities to advance scholarly, creative and person excellence in the Hamburg Area School District. Proceeds from Battle of the Birds help provide education grant opportunities for both students and adults in the school district.
Not only will fans be able to see the players, they will also be able to get some rare signatures during an autograph session after the game. For those who think they are up to the challenge, spots on the Hawks are available for a cost. Past events have brought more than a thousand attendees at the game.
The goals of the HAEF are to enhance educational opportunities for students, to encourage and support innovative educators, to build community involvement through a wide range of educational initiatives and to strengthen the commitment of alumni support in academic programs. HAEF provides awards for programs and purposes that do not fall under district and state financial obligations helping to keep and start programs that otherwise would be much more difficult.
