Twin Valley High School, like many other schools across Berks County, has Spirit Week the week before the Homecoming Dance, which usually occurs that Saturday. The week includes a different theme for each day to lead up to the dance. At the end of the week, on Friday, there is a pep rally and then there is a football game later at night.
“My favorite part about Spirit Week is dressing up for all the spirit days and seeing all the school spirit,” said senior Kaitlyn March.
Spirit Week involves competitions between the different grade levels. One of the most popular competitions is hallway decorating. Each grade level is designated to a different hallway and given a theme chosen by student council. The grades then stay after school to help decorate their grade hallway and the hallways are then judged by teachers the next day. This year the seniors were given the theme of Under the Sea, the juniors were given Horror, the sophomores were given Outer Space, and lastly the freshmen were given Wild West. The next day teachers voted on the best hallway and the seniors had won their vote.
“The hallway decorating, and voting for the faculty and senior king and queen is pretty cool, but my favorite part is the pep rally at the end of the week” said senior Jack Trego.
The pep rally consists of an introduction with all fall sports teams being introduced, a game of tug of war, mini-games and competitions between grades, cheerleading performances, and the drum-line performs a few songs.
“My favorite part of pep rallies are the tug of war matches. It gets the whole school involved in an activity. Its fun to see everyone working as a whole, and having a great time doing it,” said senior Chris Nelson, also a varsity football player.
The pep rally always has different theme’s such as school colors or a beach theme. This year’s theme is another pink out in order to support the football team because Friday, Oct. 24 (held after press time) is their pink out game, which is also the homecoming game.
Spirit Week also included the different spirit days. Each day had a separate dress up theme. Monday had the theme of pajama day, Tuesday had a color theme, Wednesday was jock day, Thursday was Twin Day, and Friday was the pink out. Seniors sometimes do their own themes on Spirit Week or get the better choices for it. On color day seniors wore the color green, and the underclassmen wore gray, black, and white.
Nelson said, “Being a senior during Spirit Week is different because instead of following the standards set by the upperclassmen, I get to set the standards for the underclassmen. I get to be a role model for showing school spirit.”
Seniors also carry on the tradition of twinning as a whole. The seniors vote on their own twin day theme. This year they chose the theme Men In Black and they later took a senior group photo (after press time).
Twin Valley’s last home football game is Friday Oct. 31 at 7 p.m., on Halloween. It will also be senior night for the senior boys graduating in the spring.
