The Brandywine Heights High School hosted their fourth annual dodgeball tournament on Sunday.

The Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) coordinated this event and all proceeds go to the Twilight Wish Foundation, an organization that gives back to the elderly. Twilight Wish honors and acknowledges senior citizens by granting wishes.

Mike Kistler, Michele Moore, and Wendy Pristach are business teachers at the high school and advisors of the FBLA. They helped coordinate and organize the event, but the students did most of the work.

This is a state-wide dodgeball tournament that Moore introduced to the school. She became involved in 2012 when the American Heart Association was the beneficiary of that year’s proceeds. She had many positive things to say about this tournament.

“This a fun event where graduated students can come back and stay involved. Everybody gets very excited for this event,” said Moore.

The referee of the games, Jeff Sheeler, graduated from BHHS and is now a current physics teacher at the school. Sheeler supports this event and enjoys participating.

The seven teams that participated were dressed in matching team uniforms and all collaborated to choose individual team names. From team shirts to fierce war paint, all of the teams wanted to win and stayed determined. This year’s winner, the Renegades, won the tournament for the second time in a row due to the team’s strategy, performance, and perseverance. Sporting the previous year’s red championship shirts, this team was the one to beat.

The gymnasium was packed with people, all cheering and applauding loudly for their favorite team. Students chanted and encouraged their teammates and classmates.

“Everyone always looks forward to this. It’s really something we get excited for every year,” said one student, Taylor Sweigart.

Jake Delong, the president of the FBLA and a senior at Brandywine Heights, was part of the runner-up team. His team fought hard and strong but after going into an intense tie-breaker, the Renegades prevailed. Delong has been a member of the FBLA since 10th grade and became the Vice President in 11th, and is now the President.

“People that aren’t playing come out to watch and support us and the cause,” said Delong.

Children of all ages, parents and grandparents, teachers and advisors, filled the bleachers.

Pretzels, hot dogs, and other snacks were offered to the attendees and each team paid an entry fee, proceeds going directly to the Twilight Wish Foundation.
