Bekah Slattery had to work a little extra last Sunday but it worked out well for her.

Freshman Slattery pitched her Lock Haven softball team to a 2-1 10-inning victory over Indiana (Pa.) in a PSAC game in Lock Haven. She gave up five hits, an earned run, walked two and struck out a season-high 11 batters.

Slattery (Daniel Boone) lifted her record to 13-3 with six shutouts, three of them coming prior to the Indiana victory – 4-0 over Mansfield and Pitt-Johnstown and 8-0 over Clarion. She was named PSAC Central Pitcher of the Week after her victories over Mansfield and Pitt-Johnstown. She also has two saves. The left-hander has worked 114.0 innings and given up 95 hits and 40 runs, 29 earned. She’s walked 27 and has 107 strikeouts.

Slattery has also helped out on offense. She’s hitting just .182 (10-for-55) but she has three home runs, nine runs scored and nine RBIs.

The Lady Eagles are 24-10 overall and 7-3 in PSAC Central play.

ERB STARTS AND RELIEVES >> Senior Katie Erb is 8-0 as a starter with the West Chester softball team. The right-hander also has six saves.

Erb (Daniel Boone) has pitched in 16 games with eight starts and has a 1.80 earned run average. She’s had five complete games and three shutouts. She was part of two other whitewashes. In 54.1 innings, she’s given up 41 hits and 14 runs, all earned, with 10 walks and 29 strikeouts. She had 8-0 shutouts of Wilmington, Del. Last Tuesday and against Shippensburg last Friday.

“The biggest difference I see in Kat this year is her maturity inside the circle,” coach Diane Lokey said. “With three years of experience, she is also throwing with much more confidence.”

The Golden Rams are currently 35-3 overall and 8-0 in PSAC East play.

DEBUT FOR LESKO >> Elizabethtown junior Andrew Lesko competed in his first outdoor track meet of the season and finished fourth out of 29 runners in the 1,500 meter run at the Millersville Metrics on April 2. Lesko (Governor Mifflin) covered the distance in 4:12.28.

A political science major, Lesko was named to the Landmark Conference Winter Academic honor roll. He finished ninth in the mile and 10th in the 3,000 meter run at the league’s indoor championship.

CATCHMARK’S PERFECT >> Freshman John Catchmark (Governor Mifflin) has started out 6-0 for the Alvernia baseball team. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound right-hander has completed his last two games – a 4-3 victory over Widener on April 2 and a 7-1 triumph over Hood last Sunday. He gave up five hits, an earned run, didn’t walk a batter and struck out seven in the latter game.

Catchmark has worked 36.1 innings and given up 37 hits and 17 runs, 15 earned, with 11 walks and a team-high 48 strikeouts. He had 11 strikeouts in victories over Stevenson (10-4) and Messiah (7-3). He also had 10 strikeouts in a 7-3 victory over Baruch.

BIEBER HURDLES FOES >> Albright sophomore Jonathan Bieber (Exeter Township) captured the 400-meter hurdles at the Alvernia Crusader Invitational on April 2. He posted a time of 57.72. He also finished second in the 110 hurdles in 16.28.

Bieber opened the outdoor season by finishing third in the 400 hurdles at the Elizabethtown Early Bird Opener on March 19.

The Lions, who were idle this past weekend, return to action in the Moravian Greyhound Invitational Friday in Bethlehem.

WENTZEL ON A ROLL >> Sophomore Haley Wentzel has had back-to-back big scoring games for the Lehigh women’s lacrosse team. Wentzel (Boyertown) had three goals and an assist in a 9-5 victory over Rutgers of the Big Ten Conference last Tuesday and had two goals and four assists in a 14-6 Patriot League victory over Army last Sunday. She’s second on the team in scoring with 30 points on 20 goals and 10 assists.

The Mountain Hawks are 10-2 overall and 4-1 in league play.

NEW EVENT FOR SAVARESE >> Juniata freshman Eric Savarese (Oley Valley) competed in the 1,500 meter and 5,000 meter races in his first two outdoor meets but he raced in his first collegiate 3,000 meter steeplechase at the Frostburg State Invitational on April 2 and finished fourth. His time was 11:41.67.

The Eagles were scheduled to compete in the Messiah Invitational this past weekend but the meet was cancelled.

DEHAVEN HELPING DUKES >> Junior attack Kaitlyn DeHaven (Boyertown) has played in all 11 games for the Duquesne women’s lacrosse team, the Dukes sporting a 5-6 record and a 3-1 mark in the Atlantic-10 Conference after a 7-6 overtime victory over Richmond Sunday.

DeHaven has scored six goals and has four ground balls, six draw controls and four caused turnovers. She had two goals in a key 12-10 A-10 victory over Virginia Commonwealth last Friday.

FOREMAN LEADS LIONS >> Freshman Ben Foreman shot an 83 to lead the Albright men’s golf team at the Elizabethtown Blue Jay Classic last Thursday at the Hershey Country Club East. Foreman (Oley Valley) finished 45th overall and his 83 matched his lowest round with the Lions, which he recorded at the Stevenson Fall Invitational last October.

Albright finished 21st in the team standings.

BIG DAY FOR BOND >> Junior Melissa Bond (Boyertown Area) had four hits in six at-bats with four runs scored and four RBIs to help the Neumann softball team sweep Keystone 19-3 and 10-2 in a Colonial States Athletic Conference doubleheader last Friday in La Plume. The biggest hit was a two-run triple in the second game.

Bond is hitting .371 (13-for-35) with two doubles, two triples, 11 runs scored and 11 RBIs for the Knights, who are 7-11 overall but 4-0 in league play.

VOLK ON A ROLL >> Freshman Nick Volk has won his last two singles and doubles matches for the Penn State-Berks men’s tennis team. Volk (Kutztown) posted victories at No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles in a 9-0 victory over Immaculata and a 9-0 triumph over Rosemont.

Prior to those two matches, Volk was 0-5 in singles and 0-4 in doubles.

Berks (5-5) will face Lancaster Bible Wednesday in Lititz.

WANNER RUNNING WELL >> Alvernia junior Heather Wanner finished first in both the 100 meter and 200 meter dashes at the team’s Crusader Invitational on April 2 in Reading. Her time in the 100 was 12.76 while her time in the 200 was 26.02.

Both marks are season bests for Wanner (Fleetwood Area) who finished second in the 100 meter (13.18) and fifth in the 200 meter (27.22) at the Washington & Lee Track and Field Carnival to open the outdoor season on March 19.

MCDEVITT ROWS WITH ITHACA >> Junior Jacqueline McDevitt (Schuylkill Valley) is a member of the Ithaca women’s rowing team, the Bombers one of the top programs in Division III.

McDevitt was with the first Varsity 8 boat that defeated Rochester Tech and Rochester recently on Cayuga Inlet in Ithaca, N.Y. They posted a winning time of 7:24.88 which was more than 10 seconds faster than runner-up RIT.

KUHNS CONTRIBUTES >> Senior Katlynn Kuhns (Schuylkill Valley) is running the hurdles for the Albright women’s track team this spring. In the Alvernia Crusader Invitational she finished third in the 100 hurdles and fourth in the 400 hurdles. Her times were 19.17 in the 100 and 1:20.85 in the 200.

HILL’S A WINNER >> Rhode Island sophomore Nigel Hill (Twin Valley) competed in his first 200-meter dash race of the outdoor season and was a winner. Running in the first of five heats in an event that drew 35 racers, Hill was timed in 22.16 at last Yale’s Mark T. Young Invitational last Saturday in New Haven, Conn.

Hill opened the outdoor season by helping the Rams capture the 4×100 (42.50) and finishing seventh in the 400 meter dash (51.05) at the Bryant Invitational April 2 in Smithfield, R.I.
