KUTZTOWN >> Earl Kochel and the Shillington American Legion baseball team spent Sunday afternoon trying to put a hurting on Cory Melchior and Boyertown in their Berks County League regular season finales.
Hours later though, Kochel, Melchior and many other usual foes were high-fiving one another and joining forces while helping the Berks County League All-Stars defeat the Bux-Mont League All-Stars 3-2 Sunday afternoon at Kutztown University.
Melchior drove in Kochel (reached on an error) with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning for the game-winning run.
Exeter’s Shaun O’Reilly, the league’s Outstanding Pitcher of the Year, threw the first two innings of shutout baseball. Shillington’s Weber pitched the third and gave up one run. Norchester’s Corey Hennessey pitched the fourth and allowed one run while Bryant Schwoyer of Daniel Boone pitched the final three innings for the win.
Norchester’s All-Stars got into the act after Josh Fulmer scored the first run for Berks in the third after singling, stealing a base before a bunt for a hit by Andy Fisher and a passed ball brought him home. Fisher then scored on a two-out RBI double by Alex Condello.
Exeter’s Jon Lach also singled in the game while Condello finished 2-for-3 with a double.
Also part of the Berks roster was Daniel Boone’s Christian Dekker, Shillington’s Isaac Ruoss and Zach Wyrick, Exeter’s Jake Fry and Chris Smith while Norchester skipper Rick Harrison led the squad.
