Sept. 23Monarch Day: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, Kempton. Free. Bring children for activities all about monarchs, including butterfly kites, puzzles, learning displays, live caterpillars, and more from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. in the Visitor Center. Visit monarch biologist John Drummond’s monarch conservation station for an up-close look at living monarchs, a tagging demonstration, and free milkweed seeds.

Sept. 24Pastor David Kistler’s 60th Ordination Anniversary: celebrating Pastor David Kistler’s 60th anniversary of ordination on Sunday, Sept. 24 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 99 Church St., Hamburg. Special recognition of his ministry at 10:15 worship service, followed by luncheon in his honor. Pastor Kistler and his wife Delores continue to faithfully serve in our parish and the larger church. Please join us to celebrate this important milestone with Pastor Kistler.

Sept. 24The Art of Charcoal Making: 2 p.m., Berks County Heritage Center, 1102 Red Bridge Road in Bern Twp. Free. In the 1800s charcoal was very important as a fuel for the iron furnaces in the area. Sept. 29Starwatch in Northern Berks: 7 p.m., Kernsville Dam Recreation Area, 25 Kernsville Dam Road in Hamburg. Free. Members of the Berks County Amateur Astronomical Society will present a short program; then invite you to gaze into the night sky to view planets and star constellations. Join Kutztown University biology professor Dr. Chris Sacchi for a casual walk through the forest and wildlfower garden at Hawk Mountain. Learn about tree identification and ecology and uses of native plants in home landscapes.

Sept. 30Autumn Lecture on Birding without Borders: 5:30 p.m., Hamburg Area High School Auditorium. Free. In 2015, Noah Strycker of Oregon is the first to see more than half of the planet’s bird species in a single, year-long, round-the-world birding trip. This humorous and inspiring presentation about Strycker’s epic World Big Year will give you a real appreciation for birds and birders of the world.

Sept. 305k Walk/Run: Sept. 30 at New Bethel Church, 135 New Bethel Church Road, Kempton. Register day of race 8 – 8:45 am. Race begins promptly at 9 am. Pre-registration fee is $25 and $30 day of race. The first 100 to register will receive a swag bag from sponsors. All proceeds from the race will benefit Beth’s Gifts Children’s Memorial Fund which aids children and families who are suffering from cancer, and New Bethel Church.
