On Feb. 22-23, a group of local volunteers will be performing Eve Ensler’s "The Vagina Monologues" at The WCR Center for the Arts located at 140 N. 5th Street in downtown Reading. Doors open at 6 p.m. for a silent auction and the show starts at 7 p.m. Join us for light refreshments, wine, beer and a show sure to captivate.
All proceeds will go towards the mission of V-DAY — to end violence against women and girls. Ten percent of proceeds will go to the Spotlight Campaign, Women in Incarceration and ninety percent of proceeds will benefit local Co-County Wellness Services. CCWS improves public health through service, education, and advocacy in the PA counties of Berks and Schuylkill. They provide free case-management, HIV medication education; HIV/STD counseling and testing, prevention interventions, and lead a teen pregnancy prevention initiative, Berks Teens Matter.
"The Vagina Monologues" — first performed in 1996, translated into over 35 languages and performed all over the world — consists of a series of monologues drawn from interviews in which Ensler talks to hundreds of women. Funny, painful, angry, the monologues are told in diverse voices ranging from a sex worker to a victim of mass rape, a 65-year-old to a young lesbian.
Twenty years since "The Vagina Monologues" first shattered taboos, the stakes could not be higher. V-Day is a movement that grew out of the untold stories of women. We believe women. We believe in their right to tell their stories and we believe their stories need to be heard — nothing is more powerful. Help us create the change we wish to see in the world, locally and globally.
