The Talisman Players, a Kutztown community theater group, will present "The Wizard of Oz” at Kutztown University's Georgian Room in Old Main.
Opening night will be Thursday, Jan. 17, at 7 p.m. followed by performances on, Friday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. The Saturday, Jan. 19 show at 1 p.m. includes a brunch followed by an evening performance at 7 p.m.
“I love 'The Wizard of Oz!' (along with most of the theater going world),” said Tom Nardone, Talisman Players co-executive director with his daughter Christine Nardone Storch. For this production Nardone is director and Christine is the musical director. “It brings out the child in all of us.”
Nardone notes that what is most exciting about this production is the quality of the cast itself.
“I practically hand-picked each one and when the audience gets to see their individual and collective performances they will understand why. The play is difficult to present in that everyone has such high expectations. I'm not worried; this production will be talked about for years.”
What makes this a unique show?
“We have some wonderful and strange surprises,” said Nardone. “Some audience participation, lots of exciting moments and some unique technical effects.”
The Talisman Players is a community theater group based in Kutztown.
“We really care about presenting quality theater at accessible pricing. All of our funding comes from ticket sales and ad support,” said Nardone. “We are a community theater that accepts everyone into our group and our challenge is to keep growing. We would love to grow our group more; that would give us the chance to do productions that require more diversity. Having said that, we are very careful to select shows that represent the best of who we are and what we can present, so that anyone spending their hard-earned cash will always leave our productions satisfied that they have experienced the true ‘magic’ of live theater. That's what The Talisman Players is all about, that's what makes us unique and very special.”
Nardone founded and directed The Talisman Players of Staten Island, New York, a community theater group that produced quality theater for more than 30 years. His daughter, Christine Nardone Storch eventually took over as director and formed her own theater company, The Jr. Talisman Players. Talisman Players of Kutztown was created in 2014 to present community theater productions in Kutztown.
