Boscov's has joined other retailers in pulling the plug on Thanksgiving shopping.

The Exeter Township-based department said in a press release that it is doing so out of concern for the health of its employees and customers. Closing on Thanksgiving both eliminates a highly congested shopping day while also giving this day back to families, the company said.

“COVID-19 has required enormous efforts from our associates and they’ve more than earned this time off,” said Chairman and CEO Jim Boscov in a statement. “More than ever, this year has reinforced the importance of family and this decision allows our customers, coworkers and communities to enjoy an uninterrupted Thanksgiving meal.”

Boscov’s joins other retailers, such as Walmart and Target, in closing for the holiday, which has been used by many retailers in recent years as a springboard into Black Friday and the Christmas shopping season.
