After 34 years, Bressler's Inc. is no longer in the towing business.
With its sales and service segment growing rapidly, the Caernarvon Township-based company recently sold its towing division to its competitor, V&M Towing of Ontelaunee Township, Berks County.
The sale was completed Sept. 27. Terms were not disclosed.
Morgan Bressler, vice president and son of founder Ronald Bressler, said the decision to sell was difficult.
"It took probably two to three years of conversations between our core people," he said. "It definitely was not an easy decision, but, thankfully, we think we made the right one."
Bressler's, which has an additional location in Robeson Township, was founded in 1984 as a towing company. It began the sales and service and truck upfitting segment in 2005.
Although the towing segment was still the biggest part of the business, the company has built more than 1,200 trucks since starting the sales and service segment, and sales are steadily increasing, Bressler said.
"We were seeing pretty quick growth on the sales and service side of the business, and it got to the point where all things were so busy that we kind of had to make a hard decision to focus on one spot, and at that point we decided to do the sales and service because that is on the growth track right now," he said.
V&M was the first choice of companies to sell to because it most closely shared Bressler's values and beliefs as far as customer service goes, Bressler said. Prior to the sale V&M was a "friendly competitor," he said.
"We always worked really well with them," he said. "The thing about the 24-hour towing business is at any point in time you could have a major incident and suddenly you're extremely busy and don't have enough drivers so we would work with them in the past and ask their help at times when we had a surge in work. They're a great to work with even as a competitor."
V&M, which also has a location in Hamburg, Berks County has been in business for more than 50 years and is third-generation owned and operated by Vince and Cherie James and their son Matt.
Efforts to reach V&M owner Vince James were unsuccessful.
