Main Street Inn, located on West Main Street in Kutztown, gave away two free rooms for Veterans on Sunday, Nov. 11, as part of the B&Bs for Vets program.
After being introduced to the program by a fellow Innkeeper, the local boutique hotel decided to get involved and show its appreciation to service members.
“We’ve always offered a discount to service members, both active and retired,” said Shena Hesselbein, General Manager of the 8-room property, “but this year we wanted to take it a step further. We liked the idea of opening our doors to show our appreciation for their sacrifices made.”
To be eligible to receive one of the free rooms, Veterans were asked to contact the Main Street Inn to be added to the list by Oct. 11.
“We had a very good response to the program for our first year participating,” said Hesselbein. “We tried to anticipate this might be a popular program. Since we only have a few rooms to give away, we selected two people at random from all interested people.”
On Oct. 12, two people were chosen at random to receive the free rooms and were notified by phone or email. While service members typically get a 10 percent discount year round, a 30 percent discount is extended during Veteran’s Day Weekend for any veterans wishing to stay at the boutique property.
The B&BS for Vets program was started over 10 years ago by Kathleen Panek, a West Virginia Innkeeper, with several bed and breakfasts from across the United States and Canada joining over the years. Each bed and breakfast can choose how they participate with the minimum requirement that at least one room must be provided free for veterans.
