Elverson >> Hopewell Furnace supported the Union Army through the production of pig iron for weapons and other articles of war. During the conflict the furnace’s residents supported the troops by supplying more domestic materials for the war effort while continuing their daily lives. Now they celebrate the war’s end and the return of the friends and relatives that left to fight it during “On the Homefront,” which was held Saturday, May 2.
Using an 8 x 10 camera, a photographer takes a group picture of the re-enactors during the “On The Homefront” program at Hopewell National Historic Site. More than 60 re-enactors from eight states dressed in period clothing took part, celebrating the end to the Civil War 150 years ago.
