The June 30 application deadline for the state's expanded Property Tax & Rent Rebate Program has been extended until the end of the year, Senator Michael A. O'Pake (D-Berks) announced.O'Pake said the extension of the "2007 Tax Year" PTRR application deadline to December 31, 2008, "is especially important to give all eligible senior citizens 65 and older, widows and widowers 50 and older and disabled adults who qualify the extra time they may need to apply for the increased rebates that many are entitled to receive this year."
In 2006, the income eligibility limit for the PTRR program was boosted from $15,000 to $35,000 (with ? of Social Security not counted) for senior homeowners while the maximum rebate for eligible homeowners and renters was boosted from $500 to $650.
The Senator said this is the first year that certain PTRR claimants will receive a PTRR rebate "supplement" from gaming revenues that could boost their rebate check to as much as $975.
"The Revenue Department estimates that some 4,800 Berks County senior citizen homeowners - - with incomes under $30,000, with one half of Social Security not counted, and who spend more than 15 percent of their income on property taxes - - will automatically be receiving an extra rebate supplement equal to one half of their base rebate, or up to an added $325," O'Pake said.
O'Pake said he's established a link on his website at www.senator-opake.com to download a PTRR application online or residents may contact his district office at 610-929-2151 for assistance.
